My point in posting this is that this is an elected official who is spreading this sort of paranoid conspiracy theory as if it were a confirmed fact.

Since Sept. 12, 2001, the U.S. Government has cared very little about confirming anti-terrorism "facts." Mere suspicion alone is enough to take action.

I believe it.

This is standard procedure for most countries. Hell, even the U.S. has sent operatives to Venezuela to train how to be hispanic. Maybe not recently, but if you remember back to the Medellin Cartel days we were very active in that region and Venezuela was very friendly with us since they were fighting FARC on their borders.

I heard this rumor that Chavez was offering classes to Middle-Easterners for how to fake a Hispanic accent several years ago.

Why is this so hard to believe? We trained Saddam Hussein and many officers of the Iraqi army how to speak English in Texas. There were a lot of Venezuelans there too back in the '80s. Before the Ayatollah was ousted, Iran was like our best buddy. Remember that?

We sold Stinger missiles to the Taliban which they paid for with American money that was almost 100% profit from heroin exports to none other than right here in the good ol' U.S.A. Most of them are gone already, but isn't it nice to know our troops might get killed with their own weapons?

That was my point initially. I can't dismiss this out of hand. It is a bit of a stretch, and for a congresswoman to suggest that it is this big scheme between the two countries is absurd and irresponsible. But, it could happen, and it's not too far fetched, Chavez and Ahmadinejad are that insane.

I watched a show where he went toe-to-toe with Oliver Stone and Jessie Ventura about the subject. (Larry King, maybe?) Both Oliver (who'd just made a movie about Chavez) and Jessie (who's familiar with how the world works- first-hand) said we had nothing to worry about with Chavez yet Connie Mack sat there repeating over and over that we "had to" because of the "threat" Chavez and Venezuela posed to national security.

I'm sure you can watch it on the net somewhere. It's important to note Connie Mack sits on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. Sue Myrick sits on the Committee on Intelligence. If this is what we're getting from our intel and foreign affairs folks, you can only imagine what the conspiracy theorists are up to!
