Will work permit expire while we wait?

We filed to remove conditions on my husband's 2 yr greencard at the end of June. What happens if they have not processed the I-751 before his current gc expires? Will he still be allowed to work in the states?

Thanks for your help!

when you filed to remove condition on green card they send you a 1 years extention on ur reciept notice .. which you can use that untill you get back yous green card

correct....and that letter is used as a proof of permanent resident status (along with the expired card) for employment and travel.
