SSN or TAX ID NR??

So my husband reckons the lady in the tax office said i wont get a SNN & Card just a TAX ID NR because im not a citizen? Why in the devil would they ask on the visa documents if we would like a SSN?? Im confused?

Also even thought i ticked the YES box i have heard many ppl never recieved there SSN and had to get it themselves. Would ther ebe problems if i just went there and got it myself right away? Will i need my GC for a SSN..its just i want to get my drivers lisence done ASAP an dont wanna wait over a month for either.

Of course you can get your SSN without being a citizen. You may want to wait 2-3 weeks following your POE before applying to ensure your information has been forwarded from the POE and is in the SAVE sysytem. I went to my local office 3 weeks after POE. I took my passport, birth certificate and filled in application form ( SSN Application ). I had no issues at all and had my card 6 days later. Good luck!

BTW I did check off the box on the DS-230 form but had read so many threads of filers not getting their cards I went ahead and applied...it all worked out for me.

yes you can get your SSN and yes you would need to bring your GC with you. that's the first thing the the SS window rep will ask you for.

I was only required to provide my birth certificate and passport with my endorsed visa. My green card (which I had not received yet) was not asked for at all.

i guess different office different procedure. because when i tried to get a new SS card back in 2008, the only thing the rep asked to see was my GC. had BC and passport as well, but my application was rejected. forgot to renew my GC so it was showing expired.

My fiancée [then] also checked the box for her SS but we went directly to our local office and we applied. We brought copies of our K-1 package [just in case] and her passport... Some local offices have employees not willing to go the extra step, so you may find a little trouble. You will have to let them know to look further and your name should be in the system 2/3 weeks from POE. You will get a conditional card..

GC. You don’t need a GC for a SS Card. You will need to remove the condition.

I would guess the requirements would be different if you are replacing a card as opposed to applying for your first.

I was very lucky at my local office, it was a very straightforward process.

I wasn't aware there was a "conditional" SSN card?

the only conditional SSN card I have seen had been for K1 visas who haven't gotten their GC yet or AOS . Once they completed AOS then they were able to get a "regular" GC
