We filed our taxes joint, and requested an ITIN to do so.

On the question 33a in Part II, "Have you applied for a SS #", should we put the ITIN? or are they completely different....

They are completely different and you should not put any other number, other than SSN.

Make sure you contact IRS once you are assigned an SSN.

You can contact the ITIN office by calling 1-215-516-4846.

What steps do I have to take when I have an ITIN and become eligible for a Social Security Number?

Make proper application for an SSN and upon receipt of the SSN advise the IRS ITIN Unit of your new SSN. The new SSN will become the primary number and must be used for all future filing purposes. The IRS will void the ITIN. All prior tax information under the ITIN will be associated with the new SSN.

Thanks for this info, that is exactly what I was worried about, the two being out there concurrently.

Has anybody checked with IRS on this? I called the ITIN unit up and they told me that there isn't anything they needed to do - just file the new tax return with SS# and everything will use the SS# rather than ITIN#. I am not sure if I understand that how it will deal with past ITIN returns.

Anybody experienced with this?
