ALBANY, N.Y. -- Former talk show host Montel Williams met with lawmakers in Albany as he lobbies for the legalization of medical marijuana in New York.

Williams, an outspoken advocate for the drug for the past several years, suffers from Multiple Sclerosis. He said smoking marijuana helps dull the chronic pain he experiences.

Williams met with Democratic Conference Leader John Sampson as well as Brooklyn Senator Eric Adams. Williams said both of them were supportive, but he recognizes that the state faces a lot of other challenges it needs to address first.

While legalizing marijuana is a hotly debated issue, Williams said most people don't understand the arguments behind it.

"There are things that the people who claim to be against marijuana don't know that they don't know," he said during an interview with Capital Tonight. "They have no idea why they have the stance that they have. They just come up with a stand and they come up with these anecdotal reasons why they say no."

If the bill is ever passed, New York would be the 15th state to legalize medical marijuana.

India, gun buyback and steamroll.

It's ridiculous that it's not legal already.

If the reasons why it were made illegal 90 years were brought to light, then maybe we could get it legalized again....

Of course, racism is a touchy subject for legislators who have reputations to keep for their parties

Doesn't matter as no one uses the racial angle to support keeping pot illegal.

The reality is parents don't want their kids to smoke weed as they did in their youth and any major politician that wants legalization will get hammered on the issue. Don't any new major push towards legalization nationally so I don't expect to hear many politicians taking that position.

Kids get hammered and do really stupid things. For example, they get horny and have unprotected sex with randoms they wouldn't touch with a 10ft. poll sober. They drive smashed. Get in fights, crash their vehicles at high velocities, etc.

On weed you just want to eat, play video games, be on the computer, watch tv, listen to music, or go to sleep.

One drug is legal but extremely dangerous. The other drug is illegal and harmless (for the most part).

I thought he lost his TV Show for being a CrackHead........

He sure looks like one. He got pawned for having that fakeazz psychic regularly on his show, that was discovered to be a fraud. Only a crackhead like him would believe her utter bs.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I pretty much agree with that based on my personal experience and many people have done the same or have interacted with people who use their drug of choice so why is this news to anyone over the last 40 years? Most people under the age of 60 know it but there's no groundswell to legalize marijuana.

If "medical" marijuana becomes legal,

recreational use will still be illegal but

there will be a big spike in cases of multiple sclerosis.

I hear there's a lot of that going around...

Labeling him a crackhead on baseless accusations is thinly veiled racism.

Williams enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1974 and completed his recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina. While training at Twentynine Palms, California, he was selected for training at the Naval Academy Preparatory School. A year later, he was accepted into the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.[3] Upon acceptance to the Naval Academy, he was discharged as a Corporal in the Marines and entered the academy in 1976. In 1980, he graduated with a degree in General Engineering and a minor in International Affairs , Williams was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy. Williams was the first African–American enlistee to graduate from both the United States Navy's Academy Prep School and Annapolis.[4]

Williams became a cryptology officer and served aboard USS Sampson during the U.S. invasion of Grenada. He also served as a Crypto Analyst at Ft. Meade, Md, for the NSA, and did three years on Nuclear Submarines. His awards include the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, two Navy Expeditionary Medals, two Humanitarian Service Medals, a Navy Achievement Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals and two Meritorious Service Medals. After 22 years of military service he departed as a Lieutenant Commander.[5]

Legalize it especially for medical use.

Montel Williams has MS. This is a devastating disease and cannabis has been proven effective for treating the pain that comes with MS and certain cancers and many other diseases. I REALLY take exception to whomever made light of this by saying he is a crack head or that many ppl will feign MS or whatever to get hold of medical weed. 1. Feigning cancer or MS is almost impossible as the diagnisis is made through imaging, etc...2. Medical grade weed is different to street weed.

Unless you have suffered the constant unrelenting pain of cancer/MS or alot of other diseases...honestly YOU DON'T KNOW! I have. I am not a drug addict, crackhead or anything, but if eating a cosmic brownie or smoking a joint to relieve the pain I have , I would do it.....Only medical use of weed is not legal in TX.......

More power to Montel, is what I say. I'm not even a fan of his but he is totally a role model for those of us with progressive MS! Yes, on top of the injuries sustained in the military, I have SPMS..... I don't mention it much because that's not what defines me...but......it's worth mentioning because I KNOW the constant nerve pain that's relieved by cannabis. It's strange to me how ready they are to prescribe me narcotics and not letting me have cannabis.

Explain that to me. yet again those in genuine need for something are prevented from getting it due to scum who abuse. Pfft....

I love Texas, I really do, but they should allow folks like me medical cannabis!

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

I really take exception to your comment about spiking MS cases.......because there is there's also alot of cancer going around, alot of folks in chronic pain going around, alot of deserving people who need relief from the insipid nerve pain that does not respond to conventional pain killers and their alternative is opiate/narcotic pain killers going around........

There is a very good case for legalizing it, based on the pain suffered by people who have done nothing wrong other than have a progressive disease that causes unrelenting chronic pain. But the laws are dictated to accomodate the lowest common denominator of society.......the folks that find a way to abuse.......

There may be a good case for legalizing it if controlled in a secure way,

but as we have the example of Michael Jackson, a doctor will give a

patient who pays well pretty much anything. A doctor could very well

prescribe marijuana for a case of whiplash if the price is right.
