This is ridiculous. Why don't people just call the police?

Because the police don't arrive quickly enough. Seconds count, to say nothing of minutes.

Oakland votes to lay off 80 police officers

OAKLANDJune 25, 2010|By Matthai Kuruvila, Chronicle Staff Writer

Atlantic City may lay off 59 police officers, three times more than had been expectedis how Langford is going to try to justify the laying off of these officers. I mean, since the city's so called 'hiring freeze', he's hired approximately 30 people and now there is a plan to hire about 10 new trashmen. So the city, which has no money, can find a way to hire 40 people while at the same time laying off upwards of 60 officers. Lets do some math here - $90,000 for a PS Director, $60,000 for a horticulturalist, $60,000 for a weights and measurements employee, and in the area of $30,000 for the rest of the employees hired during this HIRING FREEZE. If my math is correct, that's about upwards of $1,110,00.00 in wages that the city already doesn't have. Oh, and lets not forget benefits for these people. So there you have it, a mayor who wants to cut the police force by up to 60 people and at the same time is willing to place the citizens of Atlantic City at risk. And lets not forget the tourists who visit and spend their money in this city while on vacation. Have you ever taken a drive down Pacific Ave. at 1 a.m. when the tourists are walking down the street to their next destination and seen the degenerates of the city lurking and scoping out their next victim? Try it out some time. Maybe you'll even be lucky enough to see one of them get mugged, jumped, and beaten. Yeah, hire 40 new people and get rid of 60 cops. Great idea. Lets see how that works out for you.

Most of the police that are complaining are not even from AC as a matter of fact they use fake addresses and or rent a appartment for a while just to get a job here !! They dont care one bit about our residents just about the $$$$. Go find a job in your own lilly white neighborhoods. How about them apples for ya. HOW would AC staff the police if this did happen your way?! With whom? they tried to find more black men and women for this job Guess what!????? too many are not qualified and the few who are, are not enough in numbers. our own men and women are either on drugs, took drugs, in rehab or have been in jail. The very very few who are not in those catagories, might have a bone to pick with not being called back to serve the AC police dept and get started on training. When some of these men and women get married and have kids..they move away! why becsues the school system in AC stinks! has for the past 20 + years.

It's a shame that the people who are talking about/bashing what police officers make. I mean, you have positions in the city such as horticulturalist and weights and measures who make 60K a year to start. Police officers start off at approx. 52K. Now, can you really sit there and tell me that someone who goes to work and deals with the shitebags that this city has to offer doesn't deserve to make that much? They go to work and deal with people who, if they could get away with it, would kill you at the first chance offered. But 52K is too much money. Instead, give some true scumbag, who i KNOW isn't qualified for the position, 60K to make sure people aren't getting ripped off for their cold cuts. It's a joke how you people sit there and actually think you can justify what you are saying. Did you know there were 7 shots fired at, believe it or not, Carver Hall last night? Guess who were the men and women speeding there to set order to that rat trap of a neighborhood? The Police. Just to give you guys some FACTS about the police dept. this year - 50 + (and counting) guns taken from the streets, approx. 1,500 bags of heroin (that's 300 bricks in case you're counting), and several ounces of crack/cocaine. And you should really thank the police for not arresting your little monsters for possession of marijuana - obviously they have much bigger problems on their hands. If this city is actually stupid enough to lay off 59 cops, I can't wait to see what you have to say when there are more deaths due to the lack of police presence. When this day does come, please take a moment to thank the mayor that you voted into office. I'm sure he'll be happy to hear from tha homies.

For all the comments I have read, the ones from the drug addicts, the drug dealers, and the young punks who aggravate police officers duties, I must say, you are nothing but criminals in waiting or just past low life criminals in the parole system. You should be ashamed of yourselves. For anyone to conclude we can afford to lose over 60 officers at one time in this time of crime and unemployment just goes to show the "type" of individual commenting here. The crime rate in AC is at an all time high! Our officers have nothing to do with race, although I have seen many ignorant "race" related comments towards our officers. If I stated anything about our black brothers and sisters, I would b a racist! Although it's proven with video and audio, all keep claiming they are innocent! When it's obvious they are not, they are just criminals who got caught! Just like the white scum who do the same. Criminals are criminals, no matter what color! And then they cry and whine about it, although they did the crime and now don't want to do the time or pay the fine! Now they comment on our officers on the street. Protecting us an putting their lives at risk for some of the scum who have stated here they shouldn't receive 50 k or more! All should receive MORE! They have to deal with crminals like you everyday. Our police should not suffer from a mayor who is AGAINST WHITE ppl in charge, because he can't get his brothers and sisters in charge! Or from a FAT GOVERNOR who can't stop eating 5 pizza's a day for lunch. Perhaps, our mayor should give back the lawsuit money he and his sister stole from the Atlantic City a couple of years ago. Our Atlantic City 'brothers and sisters' have forget how he and his sister robbed us! (Yes, robbed us, we are the taxpayers who paid the scummy scum and his sister for a bogart lawsuit) Amazing how many 'brothers and sisters' forget about being robbed like that. Now they agree the Police force should take the hit for such corrupt activity by a mayor who is so RACIST it shows with every move he makes. He should b ashamed of himself!

The funny thing is the ones that are complaining about the Police and Fireman making too much money is because they are losers......If you or I had the same job they had you would be fighting for it as well...j@ckars. Sick of hearing people bitoching about it. Like I have said in many posts it is not our Police and Firemen to blame, it is the people running Atlantic City. I wouldn't live in AC...can't even drive down on Pacific Ave. to go to DGE for meetings without having some stupid ars walking in the middle of the street and even if you honk they want you to hit them they wants to sue yous ars. Stop blaming people that took tests passed and got hired. Stop saying that they are taking your taxes because they are not. Any of you if had the opportunity would do the same. Its called life. We all choose to be losers or winners. We all chose our professions; some state jobs, some federal and some private jobs. I chose legal work in the public sector, could I have gotten a state job of course, but I make more money in the private sector. I salute our Police and Firemen, and the only ones complaining are the ones that didn't do anything with themselves or are unhappy in their private sector jobs. You that complain sound like volleys. How about the cop directing traffic and gets hit by a bus, young just had a kid....oh what do you think then if it was your son or daughter working for a scummy city that has a mayor that promotes this kind of sh$it dont want to fin hear it. Peace the f out.

@ balls_mcgee. I know a few police officer in A.C. and they have only been on for about two years and from what I understand they make 50k a year. That doesn't sound like too much money to put your life in danger. Like I said before, its going to be the younger cops that are going to be laid off. The older, more well paid ones are still going to be there and that seems to be the ones that most people have a problem with. I just think that the city is cutting their nose off to spite their face. And as for the job going to the lowest bidder, I don't want my safety put into the hands of the lowest bidder. I think that the civil service test is the most fair way to do it.

Aww Jaypan sounds a little jealous! First, you need to understand that cops pay taxes as well; yes right out of their paychecks, as well as on their 400k homes, and whoa...newsflash, even on their tiny ranchers and mediocre townhouses! Which by the way, if you're going to say 400 & 500K houses, you don't want to both use a decimal AND use the "k" (because you actually put it in hundreds) instead of allowing the "k" to serve it's function. Now, I got a little offtrack, but if you understood that cops pay taxes as well, you might see how cops, in essence, contribute directly to their own pay! Secondly, I don't know a cop that won't go to a traffic call. While it is true that AC has their own traffic unit, patrol does include making traffic stops. But then again, maybe you need to understand that in AC, certain calls have a tendency to take precedence over others; such as gun calls, stabbings, robberies, domestic fights...things of that nature. Got to go call my Realtor now...just saw an awesome 3 level townhouse right on the bay, fully equipped with an elevator and personal boat dock.

We presently have a Governor, that has decided to pick out a certain segment of society, ( Police, Teacher's and Firemen ) and decided that they make too much money, and therefore should make less. Homeowners, property owners, and business owners, maintain value in their towns with, good school systems, strong police forces, and great fire depts. The Governor is systimatically going after the middle class and he's determined to balance the books on the backs of hard working, taxpayers. I thought this Governor would be a POS, and he's a bigger POS than even I imagined. I blame those who voted for him. Police, Teachers and Fireman didn't make this mess.

We know it's a dangerous job, and that someone needs to do it. However, it is not a job that requires a particular skill set that can not be learned on the job. Therefore, in the spirit of American democracy (capitalism), why don't we give the jobs to the lowest bidder? Then again, that would probably have all the white folk hooting and hollering about reverse racism again, since the lowest income demographics (note: poorly educated minorities) would hold even more of the positions. Either way, good riddance.

I have worked in AC for 16 years and lived here for 5. The crime is worse then ever and has gotten worse since they took away the K-9s.I know there are a lot of fat lazy old police officers out there during the day, but what people dont understand is that those are not the officers that are going to be laid off. The young in shape officers that still believe that they can help make this city better are the ones that are getting laid off. They are in the 800 block of Maryland and Stanley Village every night arresting drug dealers and teenagers with guns. From what I understand they have gotten around 90 guns of the street since January. And for the people that think they get paid too much, I lost a brother to a violent shooting and I have had a gun stuck in my face and if you think that they dont deserve it, your crazy. Takes a lot of guts to go through a door not knowing if your gonna get shot. They put their lives on the line everyday for us. God bless them all.

Just a thought; maybe if more AC public safety employees actually lived in AC, the election of these moronic city officials wouldn't have occurred. I guess this is the price you pay for getting as much as you can get from AC taxpayers & taking it to other communities. This definitely has NOTHING to do with race, it's just a fact. I can fully understand not wanting to live in AC, but the down-side is that you have no voice when it comes to choosing who will make decisions about your livelihood.

I always said the police were racketeers and this notion of getting paid todays pay rates for vacation/sick time accumulated years ago is the biggest public scam of all time. Who else but public officials gets this benefit? Why is this clause in public contracts? Who gets to accumulate sick days for 25 years then get 20 times their original value when you decide to cash them in????? No wonder we pay the highest property taxes in the nation. We have far too many cops in this state compared to any state in the U.S. When many NJ cops retire they not only leave with hundreds of thousands of dollars in severance deals and near 6 figure pensions and medical benefits for life, they also leave the state because they don't want to pay the same property taxes they benefitted from all along. Talk about kicking the rest of us while we're down!!!!! One other thing should change as well. When cops are convicted of brutalizing people let THEM pay the lawsuits judgments out of their own bloated paychecks, pension and possessions. We'd see far fewer of these incidents then we see today. Why should we have to pay twice while they get to sail off into the sunset of another state rich and free as a bird?

I'm a traffic cop who logs on daily under the screen name "The Truth Hurts". However I fail to disclose to the public the fact that I have run radar from my personal vehicle with license plates that say "Traffic". This done under the watchful eye of many supervisors in the ACPD. While I'm in the confessing mood I should also admit, that I regularly leave my place of employment 15-30 minutes early to avoid the Hamilton Township Police Department. We haven't been seeing eye-to-eye because I refuse to comply with traffic laws while passing thru the Township. I want to state for the record that it's shameful of me speak unfavorable of others when I myself have committed so many illegal acts while employed as a law enforcement officer of the City of Atlantic City. I've been unjustly labeled by members of the department as a whinner, complainer, and cry baby. To a certain degree they are right. It's no ones fault that i can't pass the Sergeants Test after twenty plus years. Can someboby HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!! It's not fair that these young people are allowed the opportunity to test before their 7th year anyway. May be we can introduce this as a new bylaw at the next P.B.A. Meeting! Hint Hint! GUYS...... I have been told that if I confess before the NJSP Offical Corruption Unit comes I would not be charged. So the above statement has been made voluntary, without undo pressure from law enforcement. May god have mercy on my soiled soul........ Michelle please forgive my past hatred toward you. I've seen the light!!!!!!

Why not just pay every officer what they're worth? No cop deserves a 6 figure salary. Many people attend institutions of higher education for a decade after completing high school, and still don't have the same starting wage as an AC cop or a firefighter that spends most of the time on the clock watching tv and luring teen girls into the firehouse with pizza. They should get 50g a year, with a 1g raise every 3 years.

The Press of Atlantic City reported the other day; STATE APPROVES THE LAYOFFS OF 35 AND DEMOTING 15. Now it reports LANGFORD wants to layoff 59 POLICE OFFICERS, and 65 FIREFIGHTERS= 124 PUBIC SAFETY JOBS. Look what's next: Promoting SGT's to DEMOTE SGT's. This is to save a few SGT'S who happen to be black(AFRICAN AMERICAN). This is the plan of a MADMAN who has a VENDETTA against the ACPD, ACFD, ACBP. Meanwhile the safety of it's citizens is compromised. Wait til the Casinos find out about the FIRE LAYOFFS. Their INSURANCE WILL GO THROUGH THE ROOF, for a decrease in FIRE DEPT MANPOWER. The city's safety is now officially compromised, because a man has issues with white people(CAUCASIANS).

sallyo has it right. EHT has more residents than AC and is 68 square miles to AC's 48 city blocks and EHT does fine with a PD one quarter the size of AC's. The casinos have in house security. An AC police officer gets a hang nail and they are out for 5 years on disabilty. They work so hard? Where? When? Over 400 officers in 48 blocks, where are they? The chief is the highest paid in the state, isn't he? Every time something happens he is on "vacation". Bet he retires with a big check for all those unused "vacation" days though. Even Whelan complained when he was mayor how few AC cops actually lived in AC. Too bad for them, they cannot vote in AC. Oh well....

Municipalities are laying off everywhere. It appears the gravy train is over. The biggest problem with what is happening here in Atlantic City is the unfairness of the process. The city did not even look to layoff provisionals or temps first. They took this opportunity to get rid of those employees they could not get rid of through civil service...because they are doing their job. Now I must admit there are some on that list who haven't worked a day in municipal government but come on Mayor..stop this vendetta! When will this b*llsh*t ever stop!!

Wonder what happens if and when any of the Langford Council (since they're too scared to be independent or objective enough to be titled City Council) needs to call the police or fire department for something serious. What would happen if it hit home, where their loved ones were, and there wasn't enough manpower to get there in time. Would they kick themselves in their own butts? Would they be able to look at their loved ones and say I'm sorry I couldn't get help here fast enough? Are they hoping the public safety director, street cleaners, or council aides (oops, I forgot they have now been renamed) are going to go there lights & sirens to help them? Or maybe the multicultural affairs office, or the man who weighs bologna (or is supposed to anyway) is going to come and handle the situation? GUESS WHAT COUNCIL MEMBERS...even if nothing happens at your home, it will be happening all across Atlantic City, to people you know, people you're supposed to represent and look out for. Because the calls for help from the community will not cease to come in simply because there are less officers and firefighters. You do understand that, don't you? This is Atlantic City. You do understand the types of crimes that go on in this city...right? And you do understand that you're not just laying off and hurting the people (in which you the council DID in fact approve of hiring) rather it will surely reach someone you know; maybe a niece, a friend, a co-worker, a neighbor. Give it time, it will come back to haunt you. And to the law abiding Atlantic City residents...think of all the times you or someone you love may have had to call 911. Now ask yourself what might have happened if no one ever showed up to provide the help you needed? Please do not sit back and allow this to happen. Come to the meetings...speak up. Let the council members know that they are supposed to be looking out for the residents, not just some sole individuals whacked out political agenda.

who cares if some of these scaredy cats are layed off. most of them don't go where real crime is anyway. there are only a few who really risk their lives. the acpd has some of the most lazy, arrogant bunch of a..holes i have ever seen in my life. you should only be on the force if you qualify physically and mentally. so to all the wife beaters, druggies and over weight lovers on the force don't spend your unemployment checks in one place.

Attention Residents: In response to the recent unprecedented spike in crime I have taken the following actions as your mayor to protect you. 1. Remove all police k-9s from the city 2. Demote the white police chief and 2 white deputy chiefs. 3.Lay Off at least 20 cops and possibly 60, if i can find a way. 4. Hired a public safety director. 5. Taken all unused vacation time from the cops.6 6. Eliminated the use of vacation time between july and september. 7. Hired my friend to weigh the bologna!!!!!!

And the Casino Executives and Governor's Office watch as this sad comedy progresses .... This mayor is playing with fire as the town is already viewed as unclean and unsafe while the crime rate is skyrocketing ... what do you think will happen with a totally disgruntled police force as the busy summer season hits coordinated with PA & DE Table Games starting .... Casino Execs and the Governors Office are sitting on their hands on this one way too long and better move quick before the States Golden Goose turns back to a rotten pumpkin ......

TELL YOU ONE THING TO YOUR FACE, Do another behind your back, that is this administrations normal course of business. REMOVE THEM ALL, From the Mayor to the Council, only problem is most of the cops do not live in the city so they can not vote. And for all the police officers that thought they were assured that promotion or job security by voting for Langford over KURTZ, you had best think again. SEEMS LIKE YOU SUPPORTED THE WRONG GUY! By the way, I hear STRIKE FORCE SECURITY SERVICES IS HIRING.

Dear Police, Just start shooting suspects until you get your dogs back. Start ticketing every city employee to raise revenue. Do not respond to domestic abuse calls comming from Rennie and Speedys houses. This Langford is officially out of control. keep it up dummy and you'll be toast in no time.

Mr. Davidson wasn't treated very well when he got up to speak, either. He respectfully asked for more time, even asking to use other officer's speaking time after they offered to yeild it... but no. Mr. Davidson was told 3 minutes and no more. I suppose after being elected time and again by making the promise of "safer streets," it's not so easy listening to the police officer's whose jobs you're voting to eliminate. Why is it the first to go is the first responders? You would think non-essential staff would be on the chopping block first -- like council aides or even council members' salaries. Just a question: If someone robs my house and the police don't show up becasue they're at the scene of another crime, can I sue the city for negligence?

Sweet. A liberal retard believes the burglar's civil rights have been violated.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
