GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — A small Indian tribe on New York's Long Island learned Tuesday that it had won a decades-long fight for formal federal recognition, inching it closer to opening a casino.

Shinnecock Indians celebrated with prayers and song but declined to discuss gambling, which would require further government approvals.

All jokings aside, wouldn't it be better for Native Americans to become full citizen of America? They could access to everything as Americans do. It seems like they only benefit to being a Native American tribe is being able to open up houses of vice (aka casinos.) Native Americans can continue to hold on to their culture, languages, religions just like millions of Immigrants do from hailing from shores of Ireland to the cliffs of Japan.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. Native Americans who were here at least 10,000 years before the white man should embrace the culture of foreigners who stole their land, slughtered and subjugated them and have no hard feelings. I'm sure that the people of the Indian subcontinent felt the same way when the British, French, Dutch and Portuguese showed up. Natives open up casinos because they can't do anything else with the land that they have. The white man took all the good land and exiled the Natives to useless and worthless land. Natives are not immigrants like the Japanese and Irish, this is First Nation land, they have no other home to go to. If some foreign power went to Japan and told the Japanese that they were second-class citizens and that they couldn't even speak Japanese or pray, what would you say? It was much worse than that but you get the idea.

Actually, Japan messed over its indigenous people, too. The Ainu, an ethnic group that bears some Caucasion traits, were stripped of their culture and customs by the invading Japanese.

If the Native Americans become full citizens of America, they don't have to give up their culture, religion, etc. There are, again, millions of non-Christian Americans who are full citizen of America yet maintain a distinct culture. I think it would be better for them speaking from immigrant experience. Each successive wave of immigrants left all that was their home and came to America and made it here. And look at Native Americans. Despite being here longer than anyone else, they still live in reservations and are generally poorer than any other groups and stagnate in education.

You don't understand citizenship or reservations or the history of the Aboriginal People or the wanton abrogation of treaty after treaty by the white man. Go and read the history of how 2 billion acres was stolen from the rightful owners of the land, then come back and post.
