Does anyone know of a bank or credit union, brick-and-mortar or online, in Canada, that will allow me to open a checking or savings account from within the U.S.? Where I am (Arizona) there are no Royal Bank or TD Bank branches, and it would be a pretty expensive trip to Canada just to open an account in person. ING and Ally both require a Canadian address unless you already had the account in Canada and then moved. President's Choice made me close my accounts after six months in the U.S. Any leads would be appreciated!

You could try ING. I have both a Canadian and a US ING account. Not sure what their requirements are. Could you use a Canadian address?

Sorry - no helpful info. TD requires me to do any changes in person (like change to my married name).

Why the big need to have a Canadian account again? You may have to wait until you take a trip back home.

I use Bank of Montreal with no problems with being in the US. I use my parents address for correspondence though. You can open accounts online through their website but not sure if you already have to have an account to open a new one. Something to check into. I pay $25 a month service fee though which is a little steep but I needed to keep it open for a pension payment. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

https://www4.bmo.com/openaccount/tab/getstarted Appears with bank of montreal, you can do it all online (takes up to 2 weeks) Some you can start online, BUT then have to visit a branch!!

on a side note---I kept open my Presidents Choice (PC) acct, BUT they will not keep it open if you give them USA address, thus i just gave them my parents addy in Saskatoon. Last time I was back in Stoon I had to go into the PC Pavillion and get a new card, and they needed ID, ouch!! All I had was my VA drivers license on me (should have brought Cdn passport) and the dude, once he saw my VA drivers license wanted to close my acct!! I had to tell him i was on a work visa and was returning to canada soon, lol Not all Canada banks are like that, just PC

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

The banks all seem to want a branch visit. Bank of Montreal online application page, first thing it says is "you must be a Canadian resident".

I want an account at a Canadian bank other than TD so that I can keep Canadian assets in one bank and money owing (still paying off a line of credit) in a different bank. I don't want to bring everything to the U.S. right now.

I guess I had better plan a trip...
