I got here in Washington on June 12, 2010 so it's been 9 days. At my POE everything went well except for a minor delay but overall, it was fine. Only thing is, they never gave me specific instructions or whatsoever about work authorization or SSN. I'm wondering if I should wait for a SS card since I checked in the DS-230 that I wanted a SSN and that it was okay for them to contact me. Anyway, I hope you can enlighten me on this issue. Thanks in advance. Have a good day! :)

Good question, all I can do is tell you about what happened to my husband.

We too, marked yes on the ds-230 form but come to find out they didn't apply for his SSN. We ended up going down and putting an application for it. It seems to me, that if you don't get something or at least a Welcome to America letter from the USCIS then you should go ahead and go down and put in an application too.

Welcome to the US!

Did you get an after-POE instruction from the US embassy where you had your interview? POE doesn't give you any instruction, but my embassy (Tokyo) gave me a document regarding GC, SSN and such. Since you are on K1, it might be better to go get a SSN right now, before your I-94 expires. Here is the step by step guide to getting a SSN for K1 holders; http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

Immigration Process (DCF Japan)

08/06/2008 I-130 petition at Tokyo, Japan

08/13/2008 I-130 approved

|

| Waited until we were ready to move back

07/13/2009 IV interview at Tokyo, Japan

07/15/2009 IV(IR-1) in hand

Post-DCF

07/29/2009 POE at Las Vegas

08/17/2009 GC(10yrs) received

Click here for the detailed timeline.

Done with USCIS until

- naturalization in May 2012 or

- GC replacement in February 2019

So you mean I can apply for SSN even if I havent filed for AOS yet?

Oh and another question... The expiry date of my i-94 is on Sept 12, 2010. Does it mean that I should have applied for AOS by then? Thanks!
