Taskforce Echo to tackle gang crime

City plagued by petrol bombings

Pressure on Chief Commissioner

A NEW police taskforce will crack down on warring crime gangs in Melbourne.

Chief Commissioner Simon Overland announced the creation of Taskforce Echo in response to extreme gang-related violence, including machete and molotov cocktail attacks.

"Through Taskforce Echo, we are determined to come down hard on those who believe they are above the law," Mr Overland told the Herald Sun.

"Our message to those who engage in organised crime is simple: you are not above the law.

"Your actions will not be tolerated. You will be caught and you will be removed from our streets."

Police command has been under pressure to act since the Herald Sun last month revealed how a Victoria Police intelligence report warned that violence was escalating among five key Asian gangs fighting in Melbourne.

The report outlined force fears someone would be killed if the conflict was not dealt with.

Echo will operate from state crime squad headquarters in St Kilda and will be led by Detective Inspector Dave de Francesco, who had until now headed the armed crime taskforce.

Detective Inspector de Francesco, who will have six detectives on his team, said stopping the extreme violence committed in public places was a major priority.

"They must be stopped and I am determined to do just that," he said.

Mr Overland said he was not talking about US-style gangs operating in Melbourne.

"We have identified and have been working on for some time a small number of gangs who are a menace to ordinary Victorians. And there can be no place in our state for their activities," he said.

He said police would continue to gather intelligence and run operations to try to close down their activities.

Ok, this makes more sense. From http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/06/11/2924337.htm.

--------

Task force Echo is headed by Detective Acting Inspector David De Francesco.

He says the gangs come from many different ethnic groups and operate in both the inner city and the suburbs.

"It's really a mixture. Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Middle Eastern, Australian, English. It's a variety of backgrounds," he said.

"Some of the gangs that we've noticed have formed through a school. They don't discriminate on who can join."

I despise all gangs but there's something very repulsive about ethnic gangs. It's like they come to a country for better education, money, life, etc. But they go on to feel victimized because they cannot achieve all of that overnight. To vent they forms gangs and make their situation even worse and terrorize the neighborhood. The way to a better life is not to create a worse life for yourself and your society. Good luck getting the gang members to realize this.

I think countries that absorb immigrants, should do a bit more to keep the younger generations engaged in something productive. Especially the second generation immigrants. The first generation came and worked their butts off to buy that house and to make a living. The second generation having being born in the said country feels entitled just enough to wreck havoc while not feeling part of the said country itself for being sons and daughters of immigrants.

Immigrant/Ethnic gangs are so shamefull.

I remember many years ago it was the responsibilty of parents, not goverment, to entertain, raise and guide children.
It's not the duty of the parents to have various recreational things for children/youth after school like a clean park, safe neighborhood to run around, ride bikes, skate, etc. It's definitely not the parents’ jobs to build public libraries, public gymnasiums. It’s not the parents’ jobs to encourage forming of various youth clubs.

What is it with you people and your desire to absolve the government of all of its duties toward social problems that affects everyone? To you a government is there only to protect the border and nothing more? Is this a veiled call for anarchy to have the government so distant that one day it becomes unnecessary? What’s with all the rampant anti-governmentalism.

Must have missed this key part. Not surprised though as you do have a knack for thinking 0.1 per 100,000 versus 60 per 100,000 is the same thing.

Actually what this illustrates is that the government there gets proactive before something becomes Chronic. Whereas, as has been pointed out by others before, Americans have a knack of not learning and waiting for something to hit boiling point, before even admitting there is a problem - let alone reacting.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I merely posted an article showing how an Australian city was dealing with a problem. Don't get your pretty little panties in a bunch. Mr. Paranoia.

I guess this isn't real violence.

Gezz I wonder why I would mistake it for that.

The legislators voted to allow their state police to conduct random [on the spot] body checks of teenagers in various public places; where violence is noted as being a problem.

Don't get me wrong, they have their violence too, but as my wife put it when we were last there, if only we just had graffiti, teenage brawls and the occasional stabbing in the DC area; that is, instead of the homicides every second or third day.

From May 21 2010:

Victoria Police has ruled out establishing a gang squad, arguing that the best way to combat gang activity is by dealing with its origins.

An internal Victoria Police intelligence report, which was leaked to a Melbourne newspaper, raises concerns about a rising gang culture and recommends police re-establish a dedicated Asian gang squad.

Five Asian gangs are identified in the Herald Sun in an article headed "Race war time bomb".

Among them are the YK (Yellow Klique) gang based in Richmond, the Central Crew in inner city Melbourne and the B4L (Brothers 4 Life) crew in Melbourne's west.

But Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Sir Ken Jones says there is no need for a dedicated Asian gang taskforce at this point, but he is happy to form one if circumstances change.

All lies. There is only good crime in Australia that is way better than crime in the US.

Puny wannabe groups of teenagers, hardly a US equivalent epidemic.

Australia probably couldn't reach the United States level of crime, even if it tried.

The gangs in Richmond are probably coming from the government housing. Gotta love the left wing government which deliberately builds then in wealthier areas.

I can even show you where they are: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=-37.815497,144.996282&spn=0,0.012285&z=17&layer=c&cbll=-37.81551,144.996435&panoid=T84izguQ3cfhdo6MeSh5gQ&cbp=12,9.19,,0,-27.62
