Oh dear, that's terrible! I went to the state fair Friday and forgot to put sunscreen on my face and wear a hat, so my face was pretty red, but not like that!

BTW I know this is random, but I'm just trying to get started on the Canada boards and was wondering if anyone on here is on twitter. I'd like to follow some people in the same US/Canada boat as Kyle and I are. If that's not to weird.

Oh, so I was wondering (sorry if this has been talked about before) if anyone who is in the States celebrates Canadian Thanksgiving? My husband and I did last year and we had a lot of fun! We've actually decided to make it an annual thing and we invite our friends over and have our own Thanksgiving dinner! It's nice because Kyle gets to celebrate the holiday when he would at home (although it's not necessarily on actual Thanksgiving day, usually on the weekend since we don't have the time off on Monday) and we get to celebrate Thanksgiving with one of the biggest things to be thankful for - our friends! Just wanted to know if anyone else did something like this or any other Canadian holidays or traditions after moving here.

I want to celebrate that too. I had hoped to do it last year, (moved down in August, got married in Sept), but we had a 3 week road trip honeymoon, and by the time we got back home here, forget it! There was so much to do, plus I wasn't overly used to Tim's house yet, nor the kitchen, and so much had to be rearranged and cleaned! So then I thought...next year...

Now it's "next year"...and my son is getting married, (back in Canada) on October 9th!! Canadian Thanksgiving weekend! Guess we'll just have to celebrate up there! :)

Oh well...next year......:P

Another nice day in RI, going to suck to leave next Sunday to head back to VA!!! People are far more friendly! When I go for my morning runs, other runners actually wave back, lol

On a sad note, wife lost (possibly stolen) wedding/engagement rings last Tuesday at gym!! Sure they were insured, but they were her deceased grandmothers rings and they were well over 100 yrs old!! Sooo hoping someone would return them, but I guess not!! We put signs up and everything and offered a substantial reward, but no luck.

Off to Boston on Thursday for 2 nights. Not sure what our plans are. Think a walking tour of Fenway park would be cool and seeing the restaurant "Cheers" from the TV show. Not sure what else. Wife mentioned the Freedom trail and Fennal Hall?????

Chilling on the deck, hearing the waves come crashing ashore and enjoying my Timm Hortons, life is good----Until we have to leave, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

We've celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving each year as well as the American Thanksgiving. With just the two of us it is mainly through a special meal - I did a turkey breast last year and Guinea Hens the year before. It's nice just to have a special remembrance - and I like your idea of inviting friends - that's great!

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

That's terrible about your wife's rings; hopefully someone with a heart will return them.

We were in Boston a few years back for the weekend. An acquaintance recommended we take the trolley tour. I don't normally like the touristy things but it was a great way to see Boston in a short period of time. The advantage is you can get on and off as many times as you want along the route. We saw many of the historical sites and Cheers. Have fun!

I'm so sorry to hear about the rings, Flames! I really do hope they show up.

Tim and I do trolley/city tours pretty much all the time. That way, we can decide where we want to "hop off" and "hop on" later. Some parts of the city are more interesting, to us any way, and that's where we like to spend most of our time.

Depending on the tour though..watch out for I think it's stop #9 according to the map. about two or three buses zoomed by us, and we even called the office to get them to call the buses! Finally one stopped, but it was too late to tour up around Harvard, or take the Harbour tour! :(

We did see Cheers though! Or at least..the sign. Didn't have time to go in...if you do, see if everybody knows your name!

I loved Boston! We have to go back for sure. If your into history, you could always do a tour of "Old Ironsides" the USS Constitution.

Have fun!!

Going to do the trolley tour. It appears that its actually good for 2 days, sweet!! Will buy our tickets online in a few.

Bring on the scammers!!! Guess they have seen our craigslist ad for the missing ring! Moron calls my cell phone, wife answers, and he asks her to describe the rings, ok fine, and of course he says, yep tis is the ring. So wife asks him to describe the necklace and ear rings--and he just hangs up!! Area code is from chicago as well! oh well, passed the # on to the police officer handling our case, but it wont amount to anything. If ya want to make a few thousand dollars, find me those rings, lol

Here's something off-topic: how's the mortgage situation in the US? I want a relatively cheap mortgage since prices are still nice and low in the Pittsburgh area, but I'm afraid that with the market crash I won't be eligible. Will I have a hard time getting an FHA loan? I keep looking up houses and MANNNNNN I wanna house so bad! If I have to live in the US, I want a place we can really call our own ;)

Money is alright - I should start at around 60-70k, and my husband has a good credit history in the US. Two problems I foresee are that I have a good Canadian credit history, but no US one, and I have no tax records to send in. I'm a recent grad working in my field but not for a long time.
