Would perfume be at risk?

My wife is planning to buy a few items of perfume for friends & family for

her trip to Thailand in July.

In the past, I would take them in carry-on, but since the new anti-terror

paranoia kicked in, they would probably be confiscated as "suspect items"

because they are liquids in containers.

The only way to not have them confiscated would be to put them in

checked baggage, but in checked baggage they would be more likely

to be pilfered because checked bags are unlocked and pass through

more than one set of hands.

I once had one of those "security-key" locks taken by baggage

handlers on one of my trips. They're supposed to leave them on

after inspecting the bags with their passkey but in this case they didn't.

Have any of you had experience with something like perfume or

toiletries being "lifted" from your checked baggage while traveling?

As a female frequent flyer, I always check perfume into my checked luggage. Never had any lifted, if so I would file a claim. At $100.00 per bottle of good perfume, it's worth filing a claim if it is lifted. JM2cents.

Its better to take the risk getting it stolen from checked baggage than getting it confiscated at security because it is over the 3oz rule for liquids...I have seen security at the airport confiscate perfume from people multiple times and there is little that can be done, especially if you are in a hurry.

I have never had any trouble with anything getting stolen and I have put much more expensive things in my checked luggage than a $100 bottle of perfume on international trips. But, it does happen and I have never traveled to Thailand.

Just a couple of weeks ago when traveling, a guy got stopped at security and scolded for his cologne at the bottom of his carry on, so, I guess it's checked or no-go.

I wouldn't have even remembered that guy if he hadn't been making comments to me about how annoying these people who don't know how to do the security routine are....

That's good to know; thanks for the response.

I'll have to remind her to put it in checked even

if I'm sure she is aware of that. We plan to get

the perfume online here which would be cheaper

than the cheapest duty free prices that I've seen.

Even if it's got so much publicity, people don't think of perfume as one of the "danger items"

but any toiletry is subject to confiscation but because it's a liquid they don't have the time

to examine it so they just yank it.

The trouble I had was at the NY end, not Thailand. I have the feeling that stuff like that is less likely

to happen in Bangkok.

Thanks

The duty-free (at the point of origin) scenario is to give you a sealed bag which you can carry on.

I've done that with both alcohol & perfume in the past but this time we will buy it online here

and will put it in her checked baggage. She is planning to travel alone this time (providing there

are no conflicts with the interview date which hasn't been assigned yet but seems ominous).

That's why we haven't bought her ticket yet. She'll get to see her son's university graduation

ceremony and take care of some family business while I'm home with my octegenarian mom.

Now that we're married I'll miss her more than before, but looking at the bright side we were

separated for 11 months of the year in the past and could only be together for one month.

Now that scenario is reversed.
