Hey guys, a good friend of mine is in a weird situation and was asking for advice I couldn't give, thought I'd see if someone here could...

Does anybody know if reporting a stolen credit card will reflect poorly on your credit score??

Backstory for the curious: Her sister (a scary drug addict) stole her credit card and won't admit it, my friend tried to go to her to get it back before getting her in trouble, that didn't work. She was going to report it stolen but her mother (total enabler) told my friend it would hurt her credit rating if she had a stolen card. Now my friend is unsure of reporting it, not wanting to hurt her credit. I feel like that isn't true, especially the first time, but don't want to give bad advice... :help:

Timeline:

11-15-2005: Sent in I-129F to VSC

11-21-2005: NOA1

11-29-2005: NOA2

12-05-2005: NVC recieved

12-17-2005: Packet 3 received from Dublin

1-11-2006: Sent packet 3 forms, etc. to Dublin

2-03-2006: Interview Date :)APPROVED!!!

2-05-2006: Flying to Logan Airport

2-11-2006: Wedding Date

3-14-2006: Filed AOS and EAD

3-22-2006: NOA1 (AOS and EAD)

4-07-2006: Biometrics

6-07-2006: EAD approved!!

7-24-2006: AOS Interview APPROVED!!!

7-27-2006: Received Welcome to America letter

8-03-2006: Green Card Received :)

It would not hurt her credit score to report a card stolen. :no: Why would it? She isn't paying anything late or anything to that effect.

It shouldn't as long as it is reported to the credit card company and the purchases are removed. Your credit will be hurt if you fail to pay a bill :D

She can report it lost, possibly stolen to appease her mom - as there may be no proof as such to 'accuse' the druggie sister..either way the card gets cancelled. And jasman is right - if you have bills run up on the card BEFORE you report it you might be liable as they will rightfully want to know why you delayed reporting (if you say you searched for it high and low but it was nowhere to be found, and you suspect etc etc..then that might wash if its just a matter of a few days, but not MANY days so report it NOW)

Sept 2002 - 1st US visit - everything goes perfectly.

Dec 20th - Forms recev'd at CSC

Dec 27th - NOA1 received by snail mail!

Dec 29th - 'Touched'

March 10 2006 - NOA2!

March 23 - recv'd at NVC

March 24 - petition sent to London

April 9th - Pkt 3 rec'd!

May 17th - Pkt 3 signed for at London Embassy

May 24th - Medical

May24th - Pkt 4

June 14th - Interview 10am - APPROVED 1pm!!

June 16th - Visas received in my hot little hands 1pm :)

July 19th - flying to US!

July 27th - Married!! :-)

Aug 7th - Applied for SSN in married name

Aug 9th - SSN received

It will show up on the credit report marked as: Account Closed-Card Lost Or Stolen (or at least that's how the one my roommate stole shows up on mine). It doesn't have any bearing on your score, but it will be on there. But report it NOW, before the card gets run up with purchases the cardholder could be held liable for....

She has to be willing to press charges against her sister, I belive. A friend of mine's daughter did the same thing and the CC company would do nothing unless she pressed charges. My friend wouldn't send her daughter to jail so she is paying the bill and yes, it is delinquent on her credit report.

4-17-2007: Biometrics Appointment and TOUCHED :)

5-02-2007: Greencard expires

Dec 2007: Received extention until Dec 2008

5-09-2008: Card production ordered!! FINALLY!!!

Naturalization!!!!

Finally getting around to N-400... Filed under 5 years of PR status

5-11-2010: Sent out N-400 - Phoenix, AZ Lockbox

5-13-2010: Received at Lockbox

5-25-2010: Checks Cashed :)

5-28-2010: NOA received but case number doesn't work

6-04-2010: Case number works online and says RFE sent 6-2-10

6-07-2010: Received letter for biometrics

6-22-2010: Biometrics appointment

7-24-2010: Received interview letter

8-26-2010: Interview-PASSED!!

9-30-2010: Oath Ceremony Indianapolis
