I am not a fan of pie. But I do enjoy old-world, homely chicken pot-pie. You know lunch break is in 1.5 hours. Maybe I won't do take-outs today. Maybe I'll sit down and eat.

There is momentum in the locally-grown movement. Farmer's markets are popping up in most cities now where local green thumbs are selling their own home grown vegetables and fruits.

We didn't become so dependent on imported goods from China overnight. It was our insatiable appetite for cheaper stuff that got us where we are today.

The problem starts with the consumer and is related to the lack of knowledge regarding economics.

The average Joe American clearly just does not comprehend the consequence of buying something from China, in order to save a buck. Ironically the communities that have been hit the hardest, literally middle America, are the same folks who buy whatever and wherever and don't care about country of origin.

Walmart alone generates over $400 billion in revenue every year. I'd say the majority of their products are manufactured abroad. Therefore, at the very least $300 billion from one company alone is being pumped into foreign economies. Now add in oil and every other product consumed by Americans from abroad and it's not hard to realize why middle America is the condition it is.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I think that is changing as more and more consumers become informed and conscientious consumers. I've noticed that Target, for example, sells toilet bowl brushes manufactured in Italy and assembled in the U.S.. It's next to impossible to find household products that aren't made in China, but with a growing demand by consumers for more products made in the U.S., companies are standing up and taking notice.
