CALGARY - As ketchup fans stateside brace for Heinz's first recipe change in 40 years, Canadians are being reassured that the popular condiment will remain faithful to its roots.

The tomato-based sauce, used for everything from dipping french fries to mixing into a box of Kraft Dinner, is set to see major changes to its formula in the U.S., seeing its sodium count drop from 190 mg per tablespoon to 160 mg per tablespoon, the company announced Friday.

But while Heinz Canada is planning to put out a special low-sodium version of the condiment in the next week, spokeswoman Joan Patterson said there are no plans afoot to alter the successful formula north of the border, which already contains less sodium than the planned reduction by its American counterpart.

"Americans tend to like their ketchup with a little more tartness -- we're into sugar big time," she said, noting Canadian Heinz ketchup has only 140 mg per tablespoon of sodium but tends to have a sweeter taste than the U.S. version.

"Canadians don't have anything to worry about."

Word of the planned change in the U.S. has prompted many fans to voice their horror, including Joe Olivia of Bay Ridge in Brooklyn who told the New York Post the altered recipe is not welcome.

"I'm 80 years old, and I haven't died yet," he told the Post.

"It's really hard for me to eat without salt. I think it's infringing on our rights."

Canadian ketchup lovers remain loyal to the long-standing recipe and say they would have some misgivings if the formula were to change significantly.

Lyndsey Peterson was just finishing lunch at the 2740 32 Ave. N.E. McDonald's Friday, having made good use of a container of ketchup for her fries.

The 22-year-old geologist, who said she uses ketchup on just about everything including steak, said she would have some major concerns if the classic condiment had its taste altered.

"If they changed it a lot I'd have to use mustard for everything," she said.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I know!

He saw me eating it like that one day and he was like, "... Did you just put ketchup in the mac and cheese?"

Then he tried it and loved it.

I also mix pepper into mine.

I found here in the US Hunt's makes a non HFCS ketchup that's pretty similar tasting to Heinz.

I agree low sodium foods are welcomed in my book too. theres too much salt in everything!! My fiance adds salt to all his food and i just look at him in horror. I add salt to fires but only once in a while. In my opinion salt is not needed.

Life is like a roller coaster. Hold on tight and enjoy the ride!

Heinz Organic Ketchup down here isn't TOO far off the Canadian version. It's actually made IN Canada too...on the back it says "Product of Heinz Canada". It's not the same, but it's about halfway between the standard U.S. version and the standard Canadian version. I can live with it, at least.

But yes...I nearly choked on a gobstopper when I read the "infringing on our rights" line. They're a private company and can do what they want! I didn't know that "The right to salty Heinz ketchup" was the 57th Amendment...

Coke had a right to change their recipe too, and when people hated it, they changed it back.

There are ketchup brands with less sodium, including Heinz.

I really don't care either way...

Lower sodium in foods is a good thing, its needed in cooking IMO, but its VERY overused in processed goods.

Its not uncommon to find a can of soup with over half the daily recommended allowance of sodium, in ONE CAN, #######.

And yea, low sodium is not "infringing rights" please, what an overused sentiment, if it goes on any longer its going to lose ALL meaning.

I used to put salt on all my food, I finally stopped.

I only use it in cooking and I do still put salt on raw tomatoes when I eat them. Makes them taste better in my opinion.

Ketchup is my saviour though, I got so sick of white rice that I started putting ketchup in it... much to my husband's surprise

My mom likes to put tomato juice on hers [about two tbsp or so].

I like SALT! I should say love, since I crave it on a lot of foods.

And we actually live near the Heinz factory in Ontario.
