I know several atheists and liberal is not quite the word I'd use to describe their political views.

This is the exit polls from 2008 with religious identification of voters:

Those who identified themselves as having no religion, voted for Obama, 75% to 23%. those who identified themselves as Evangelicals voted for McCain 74% to 24%.

Which is utterly useless if 100% of them were registered independents, which is where I'd put the majority of the ones I know.

You are projecting your personal experience on to the group.

This poll did not show a breakdown of religious identification with party identification, but in this poll independents voted for Obama 52%/44%. Republicans and Democrats voted more or less along party lines.

Indeed. I am an atheist but hardly a "liberal".
