You can send off the form to request it OR you can try a walk-in, which is where you walk-in with your letter etc (like you would for your appointment) and ask to do a walk-in. Worst case they say no and you need to try and reschedule. I don't know of anyone's that's tried to schedule it CLOSER though.. they normally just try walk-ins (so they don't get a LATER date).

I personally did a walk-in. Some offices won't allow it and I wouldn't have tried it normally because we were 3 hours from the location (and what a waste of a drive otherwise) but I found a review where someone had already done it so I tried it.

Check out the reviews for your ASC perhaps (biometrics office) and if you're not too far away, give it a try.
