It's just as the lovely Jess said. That $340 is waived if you file the EAD at the same time as AoS. The reason for filing them concurrently is that often, the EAD will be approved before the green card, so you can start working while the AoS is still pending.

Ewan is watching his homeland being defeated at football right now (see what I did there?! I called it "football" instead of "soccer"!). Poor dear. That's why we're going to drink bloody marys for the match against Italy...

For the work, I guess I understood it wrong >.<, the SS lady said I could work, but it's written on the back of the card that I "could" work with the immigrations authorization, aka, EAD. But either way, I will wait till september to start working, I have to prepare everything for the wedding in august

megger - you made me laugh with your "football" knowledge. I hate it! That's one aspect of UK culture I'm happy to never see again.

Let me know what you girls did with applying for SSN. At what point did Ewan and you Naddy, do it? Before or after AOS application? Some people have had real problems, mostly to do with encountering workers in SSN offices not knowing what they are supposed to be doing, lots of conflicting experiences, some people given the run around, some even getting turned away being told they are not eligible on K1 visas etc.

Aww, football's not so bad if you take Rooney out of it. I mean, just look at the guy! He exudes "douchebag" from every one of his pores! But seriously, it's pretty much the only sport I like watching on TV, and since we only get it (here, at least) once every 4 years, I have to overdose so I don't want it again until 2014!

For the SSN, we filed about 3 weeks after Ewan's arrival, and on the same day that we sent our AoS packet (so post-marriage, but pre-AoS filing). Somewhere (in the VJ downloads section, perhaps) there's a copy of the memo section stating that K-1 holders are eligible for SSN. We printed that and took it with us, but didn't need it. We were processed quite quickly and efficiently. I would suggest you take the memo thingy along with, and if the person working tells you you're not eligible, ask to speak to a supervisor.

The only time frame issue, I think, is waiting for 2 weeks after entry to make sure you're "in the system". Also, if you're changing your name with the marriage, there are a few more steps for the SSN...

Hey guys, I am plunging back into the paperwork :) Great thread already Megan!!

I have a question: I never got a copy of my DS 3025 - the one form was sealed into the envelope and given to the consulate - and I assume it then made its way into the envelope I gave away at POE. So what do you think I do now? Write a letter explaining this and send a copy of my vaccination records, or should I just suck it up and go to a civil surgeon?

I am also confused about my name change - I've been researching it on VJ, but it's very contradictory. I would like to change my name by changing my maiden surname to middle name and taking my husbands (hmmm, first time I called him husband :) ) last name. There was no space on the marriage certificate to indicate the name change, and the SSA people wouldn't let me change it because my name should match the I-94. So do I just file with my new name and hope they register me with it on the GC? I see no other way of "officialy" changing my name.

The SSA office I went to, by the way was completely clueless, it took a lot of persistence to even get a card in my maiden name.

Thanks!!

Mrs D., for the SSN, as I explained on the Nov Thread, 2 weeks after my arrival, 1 week before the wedding, we went to get the marriage license, they asked for my SSN or for a paper from the SS stating that I don't have one.

We then went to the SS office, and ask for that paper, and the lady over there said that I could just apply for one, and that's what we did, and I got a paper stating that I applied for one, then I received the SS card 1 week later. After the wedding, we went to change it cos of my family name change, and another lady told us that it might be a problem, cos I have to tell the Immigration service first that I changed my name, otherwise, it won't match with the name on the SSN, and we told her that we are gonna send an application for the immigration for my name change (the AoS), and that they need to have my SSN name match the one on the application and yada yada, so she said she'll try to see if the system will allow her to change it (duh <_< ), and guess what? it did lol . So I should receive it in a week.

So I guess it's better if you go apply for your SSN as soon as you can, before your wedding, and go get your wedding license, cos you have to wait 24 hours for this one.

You need a SSN too to be able to get a bank account

KisK, welcome backkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

I can't help you for the DS-3025 :(, maybe you could try to call the doc and ask if they kept a copy of your record?

For the name change, best is to call the DoS and get a clear answer, otherwise, maybe your last name can be "maiden name - husband name"

Welcome back, KisK! Great to see you again!

I unfortunately can't help you with the name change. I have no idea how to go about that.

As for the DS-3025, I would contact the doctor who did your exam for the K-1, and see if they can fax/mail you a copy of the DS-3025 (just like Naddy suggested) before shelling out the money for a civil surgeon. Otherwise, is there a record you have of your vaccinations elsewhere, or one that you can get? My guess would be that if you don't have any documentation of the vaccinations, they will require you to get ALL of them, which would be a major pain in the a$$ (literally and figuratively!)

Hey megger, I know you had a co sponsor, when you complete your AOS form I864 did you get your dad to compelte the I864A aswell. im so confused as we are using his mom as a co sponsor we are using the assests though not combining income so i am consfused as what to put on both the I864 and I864A

Hmmm, we didn't use that form at all! I'm kind of sketchy on what they mean by "household member." I don't think that is applicable to us (or at least I hope it's not!) We just each filled out the I-864, and ticked the appropriate boxes to indicate "primary sponsor" (or whatever) for me, and "joint sponsor" for my dad. Hopefully that's all that was required!

This name change business also worries me (not only the logistics of changing it but what do I change it to?! Do I double-barrel or just take his name, or have my maiden name as a middle name and end up with 3 middle names?! Might make a snap decision on the day lol...) so I had a search and this thread might be useful:
