Guys, I have an urgent question! I have an opportunity to renew my passport in Texas this fall (normally you have to go to DC) and I'm not sure what name I should use. I haven't changed my last name on any documents yet, so my green card is in my maiden name (I was going to change it after our "real" wedding in May next year). Is there a charge to change your name on the GC? Also, does anyone know how long it takes?

My other option would be to change it when I file for ROC. I would prefer to do it earlier but if it is a hassle then I will wait. Please advise!

Oh yess there is definitely a fee to change your name.

It's essentially getting a replacement GC.

$290 a pop. Surprise, surprise.. :P

I would wait if I were you, since everything else is still in your maiden name.

Go figure, they want more money! :bonk: Do you know if I can change it when we send the application for ROC?

To renew my passport in the US they charge me $200 (in Sweden it would have been $60) and it is valid for 5 years. Hopefully I can go back after ROC is approved and change the name on the passport over there next time.

Yeah I'm pretty sure you can just put the new name you want to use when you ROC.

I'm not looking forward to dealing with passport name changes myself.

Haven't decided when I'll finally bite the bullet and do it.

Check with your country's rules on changing names on the passport. For Canada, I have to do a whole new application, it is basically getting a new passport, so I will change my name when my current passport is up for renewal. Other countries, though, let you change the name for a nominal fee. Since my GC is in my married name, I will just carry a copy of my marriage certificate with me to 'bridge' the name gap until I renew my passport.

I think I would have to get a new passport, but that's okay as long as I can do it in Sweden that time. I'm not renewing it now in the US for $200 and then have to renew it again in two years for another $200 because I changed my name. Name change in Sweden is easy, I just have to send a form to the Swedish version of IRS and woopsi doo :) Of course with a copy of the marriage certificate haha! New passport is kind of easy as well, at least compared to the US.

I was going to officially change my name after our "real" wedding next year but I guess I could still call myself by my married name (read put it on FB LOL) and just use my maiden for all legal stuff.

Okay I'm here, sorry I've been out the loop just very bust with work. Yesterday I went for my interview and it was about 30mins and we were approved. Our interview was schedule for 8:30am we hit a little traffic and just running late so I was worried. I got to USCIS at 8:39 drop my interview letter in a box they instructed us to and sat. About 2mins later my name was called by a woman who at first seemed stern. As we entered her office she told us that was merely going to go through the information we submitted ensure everything was correct and accurate and she swore us in and told us to have a seat. She went over the Bio info with my wife and then the same with me. Then she ask a few question directly from the 485. Then then asked about our son we showed her pictures then she asked if we had a big wedding and we showed her pictures. She asked who were the people in the pics we showed(which she copied. All this happen within 30mins, then she said she see no reason not to approve my application. She took my EAD and I-94 and stamp my passport. told me to expect an update in a few days.
