Canada Consulate Confusion!?

20 posts in this topic

Recommended Posts

Just was informed by the NVC our case has been sent to the Montreal consulate. We have been assuming all along that we would be going to the Vancouver for the medical and then down the street to the Vancouver consulate for our interview since I live in California and my Fiance lives in BC.

I called NVC twice and they said Vancouver only processes non immigrant visiting type visas?

Have I been missing something here or did NVC send our case to the wrong consulate?

That's strange, it should have been sent to Vancouver if it's a K-1.

I don't think they'd just up and stop processing K-1s in Vancouver...

Yes Thanks! That's what we thought!

I wonder what will happen when they see it in Montreal or how to do I go about getting it fixed?

NVC assigned us a MTL prefix on our case number. Do all the K1's have that or is the prefix different for Vancouver?

Yea I called NVC twice tonight and 2 different people gave me the same answer!

I see you are going to Vancouver so that's good.

Just read in VJ WIKI everyone west of Manitoba go to Vancouver and those in Ontario and east go to Montreal.

Hope it doesn't take too long to fix...

Man that is really weird and a huge inconvenience especially since she lives in BC!

Well I am sure they will fix it all up for you Bricar I wouldn't worry too too much about it!

Yea Vancouver did stop doing immigrant visas which is too bad since we only have two consulates here that handle visas!

I heard Montreal was pretty backed up too

This is very odd, I'd e-mail Montreal with your USCIS case number and see what's going on with your petition. It'd be a shame to travel all the way to Montreal if you don't have to due to an error

Good luck.

In fact i'm moving this from US Embassy and consulate discussion to the Canada forum. There was someone who had this happen to them just a couple of months ago, maybe they will spot this topic and reply.

I would tell you who it was, but I can't remember their username :hehe:

Happened to me. Case first went to Sydney Australia then Montreal :| Long story short, call NVC. You can try and speak to a CSR first but they will give you a bucket answer that all visa processing goes through Montreal and the Vancouver does not do K-1 Visa processing. At that point ask to speak to a supervisor. They'll start to look into for you and say "Yea we messed up, we'll send a message to Montreal and transfer" . I did use information directly from travel.state.gov website but I'm having problems finding that link. I'll filter though my e-mail and see if I can find it. If I can I'll post it.

Just know it is totally possible..its just a pain but worth it.

http://vancouver.usconsulate.gov/content/content.asp?section=visas&document=fiance

What do ya know, its on the Vancouver Embassy page under Visa Information subsection Fiance(e) and says this:

"The U.S. Consulate General in Vancouver processes fiancé(e) (K1) and spouse (K3) cases for citizens of Canada, or aliens who are Canadian permanent residents. Applicants must also be residing in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Yukon or the Northwest Territories. All other applicants in Canada are processed at the U.S. Consulate General in Montreal."

Okay, so call NVC at:

Hours: Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 12:00 AM (EST)

Tel: (603 334-0700).
