Prolactin is a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland in the brain. Its primary function is to enhance breast development and initiate lactation. Hyperprolactinemia occurs when this hormone is found in higher levels then normal in the blood. Typically, serum or blood levels are less then 20 ng/ml. Prolactin may be elevated for a few reasons. The first is a benign, pituitary tumor, known as a pituitary microadenoma. This tumor is not cancerous but can cause increased secretion of prolactin. Hyperprolactinemia can also be caused by an imbalance in the hormones which control the secretion. Hypothyroidism can also cause hyperprolactinemia. Certain medications, especially those that affect dopamine, usually found in anti-psychotics or antidepressants, can increase prolactin levels.

Symptoms

Symptoms of hyperprolactinemia may be nonexistent, or women may notice the following:

• infertility
• galactorrhea (abnormal lactation)
• infrequent or irregular periods

Diagnosis

Prolactin can be easily measured through a routine blood test. Because a number of factors can affect the blood values, one should avoid breast stimulation and intercourse the night before the test. If the blood test comes back elevated, the doctor may wish to repeat the test, this time after fasting for at least 8 hours. An MRI may be ordered to look for evidence of a pituitary growth.

Treatment

Generally, two options are available for treating high prolactin levels. The first is medical care. The two most commonly prescribed medications are bromocriptine and dostinex. Bromocriptine is typically prescribed first, and can also be used to shrink a pituitary microadenoma in most cases. If the patient cannot tolerate bromocriptine, or if the physician feels that bromocriptine is not appropriate for the patient, doxtinex may be prescribed. Both of those drugs encourage the production of dopamine, which will inhibit prolactin secretion. Your doctor will probably want to periodically measure your prolactin levels to determine if therapy is effective. Medication can sometimes be stopped if prolactin levels return to and remain normal. Surgery can sometimes be indicated if the medication is not working or tolerated, or if a pituitary tumor is too large and not responding to medical therapy. Your doctor can determine what will work best for you.

Like pampering herself at the spa or something like that. She just doesnt have the twins, she has her son too. She needs a break.

G babymother sent me a message last week saying she was keeping a farewell party for Jaheim and she bought a cake but it was too small and she wanted me to send money for her to buy a bigger cake ???? She must be smoking some big head splif. Any hoo now she wants money to buy him shoes to come up with. Whay cant she send him with what he has. So since I have all kinds of issues right im goona stay quiet cause if I ever open my big mouth all hell will break loose. What yall think?

No you don't Lady C. The way I see it, you and G are the ones that will be taking care of him so why shouldn't you do what's in Jaheim's best interest because obviously she aint! Cho... anyway, politely ask G to handle this. Thats what I think....and if he don't, don't be too upset with him. Sometimes you have to pick and choose your fights sis!

Thanks for the well wishes from everyone as well. I'm just trying not to stress about it because I easily break down, I'm teary eyed as I'm writing this...

I would keep my mouth shut as well...even though I know it is hard. Let G handle it as MrsTee said. I voice my opinion to Mikel of what we can and can't do and then it is his responsibility to take care of it with BM. I don't think you should have to send any money to her AT ALL...the boy does not NEED a cake to survive and if he does need new shoes you can buy them for him when he gets here. You will be spending enough money on him when he gets here.

I’m on the first page as well .

KJ for some reason I have always been in love with NC. Well my first love was ATL but my hubby at the time didn’t want to move there he felt it was over populated and so many people were moving there so I got back on my grind and sought out NC. I went to visit Raleigh to be correct and fell in love with it. I'm just bored and cold up her in the Burgh. The city is blah and well I’m just tired of it and looking for a new change.

Plus I can get a huge house for less and NC is known to be more family orientated and the school system is pretty good. I’m just looking for a change. I’m always up for a challenge but I must admit this one I want so bad but I’m afraid of it.

I pray everything turns out o.k. for you. I see the girls are researching up a storm for you.
