On the paper attatched to the "envelope of mystery" it named me as Coralie Solms (maiden name). It also said "AKA Coralie Thomas" (married name). Can I request at my POE that my greencard and SSN get generated in my married name?

NO, that's a big NO NO!!! That rule doesn't apply to the residents residing in "The Republic of Podunk"...

On a more serious note, Yes, I am assuming that might ask you about your name preferences on the SSN and GC! Under what name is your visa issued in?

I was told that the green card is issued with the name that is on the visa. The name on the visa is the same as the name on the passport. I'm sure you can ask though

I was told that the green card is issued with the name that is on the visa. The name on the visa is the same as the name on the passport. I'm sure you can ask though

My visa was issued under my maiden name. How do I go about legally changing it when I get to the "other side"?

not gonna even ASK why your Visa is in your maiden name when you were granted a IR-1! (wht name is your passport in???) As far as I know..you may have to apply for a legal name change...bbbuuuttt...if you have your marrriage licence and all your other documents..they might issue your SSN in your marrie name...but I have a feeling your GC will be in your maiden name as it is the name on your Visa.... Have no idea if you can change that...??

never hurts to ask.....but i do know that your Visa is issued in the name on your passport, and your GC is issued with the name on your Visa... but on the bright sie...you get a 10 year and you get to file for Citizenship long before me!!!

I believe you can change your green card to your married name by applying for a replacement card but that would involve more $$$ and paperwork. I'm sure you've had enough of that for awhile. :lol:

Hell yea I have. My hubby is one of those old school types, and it bothers him a little that Im not "legally" a Thomas. Even though thats how I introduce myself... Im quite ok with not filling in anymore papers for a LOOOOOOOONG while (3 years less 90 days to be exact!).

Im off for a last hoorah with my work girls though! Hopefully I can stop chewing my fingernails to the bone for long enough to enjoy myself.

I dont believe one has to change their name when they get married, not everyone takes their husbands name. I was actually surprised my wife took mine, lol as she is a huge womens rights supporter,lol And I fully support that too, I'm all for women making more $$$$,lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
