Birth Certificate Question

I just found out that my Fiance (the american) sent in a copy of his BC with our I-129F. We just started this process and the package was sent in at the end of March. We've not heard anything yet (no NOA) so should we be expecting a request for an original document instead of an NOA?

No, I wouldn't expect an RFE. I sent a photocopy of my birth certificate for our I-129F, and ours passed quickly (in only 3 months) with no touches!

I do not know, however, if the Embassy will require the actual birth certificate or not. I am at that stage now and a little worried that they might!

A question here. In my country when we usually file for some documents and they need a birth certificate they ask not to be older than 6 months(i don't know why is it like this).

Does the same apply when you apply for the K-1 visa or it does not make any difference?

The only thing I know of that has a time restraint is the CENOMAR. It is required to be less than 6 months old....

As far as US immigration is concerned a "birth certificate" is good forever, as is a marriage or divorce certificate because the information in the certificate doesn't change simply with the passing of time. Police reports and certificates of no marriage should be current, preferably within six months but this can vary by Consulate.

This is for the original poster: I mailed an original certified copy of my birth certificate to my fiance for her interview, but the officer never asked for it! I guess it depends on the embassy/officer!

Same here, I mailed my original birth certificate to my girl to have at the interview, and the CO never asked for it. She had a ton of other original documents that he never asked for as well, better safe than sorry. You should always have originals available at the interview just in case they get asked for...

You are supposed to only mail in copies of documents with the I-129. No originals.

I did not send any of my original documents overseas to my fiance to bring to the interview. It never even occurred to me to, since as the USC I was not the one being scrutinized at that point in the process. (And in this age of identity theft, why would I send my original birth certificate anywhere? And if they needed my bc, then surely they would need my passport, and I'm certainly not mailing that off!)

My fiance brought his originals to the interview, but was never asked for them. I'm sure if he had forgotten them he would have been asked!
