IS it not assumed that the President would never nominate a SMOKER to this post?

Why then would he choose an obese person as Obesity is for many, far more unhealthy than smoking?

I raise this question not to condemn this Doctor, I will assume she is very qualified, I do it more so to take a poke at the way we demonize some habits and not others which are typically even more harmful.

SHould the Surgeon General be an example of healthy living?

If so, how did this person make the cut?

Surgeon general speaks in Birmingham for the first time since being appointed

By Anna Velasco -- The Birmingham News

February 20, 2010, 7:43PM

Dr. Regina Benjamin

Alabama native Dr. Regina Benjamin, speaking today in Birmingham, said she will focus on wellness and prevention as the nation's 18th surgeon general.

Benjamin was the speaker at a gathering of the University of Alabama Medical Alumni Association at Birmingham's Grandview Marriott Hotel. She was one of two to receive the 2010 Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Benjamin got her medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1984. The other recipient of the distinguished alumnus award was the late Ira Myers, state health officer from 1963-1986.

The family-practice doctor was the first black woman and the first person under 40 elected to the American Medical Association board of trustees, was the country's first black female president of a state medical society when she became president of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama in 2003, and won a MacArthur Genius Award.

Why not? People in certain areas of the country evidently just don't get this.

To be fair, now that people know the risks of smoking behaviour has changed. If there were health warnings on other products, it might influence behaviour - of course it would have to be easy to understand because the information is pretty much available by reading the contents label but most people either don't read those, or don't understand what they mean.
