You're the gerbil expert. Or at least that's what Eric said.

Whos Eric? Did he say it before or after you had man-love?

I keep getting told that single parent families are the root of all evil. This case is totally messed up and illustrates that no matter how many parents are in the home, if they are crappy parents, ###### happens.

Even though I disagree with the majority of what you write, I respect your intelligence. But if you don't understand the difference between some insanely abusive parents, regardless of their relationship status, and the argument, correct or erroneous, that single parent families add to the problems in society you are not as intelligent as I thought.

I don't get it. My wife was raised by a single parent. She didn't suffer from any problems. A neighbor of mind was raised by her father. She didn't suffer from any problems. The neighbor is a lawyer as well.

I can't say I'm well-versed on the theory. I don't espouse it, but I do know it is not about abusive parenting. And it's not even about single-parents being bad parents, necessarily.

I do know that in the years that I have been raising my child alone, I've understood the plight of single mothers in America. It is more difficult than anyone who has never been a single parent will ever comprehend. Even without any income from my husband, his being here makes our lives easier, and allows me more time to do things for our daughter that I couldn't do before. I also know he offers a balance to my parenting.

I won't go into the minute details of why or how, but having him here changes every aspect of our lives from eating healthier meals to getting more exercise, etc. Yet, I'm the same parent I was before he was here. That's just my anecdotal evidence which is only worth the lines it takes. But it is meant to illustrate why two parents, if they are decent parents, might be better than one who is a decent parent.

Concerning the matter of my intelligence or lack thereof - what you believe about it is of zero interest to me.

Regarding your assertion that 'single parent families' add to the problems of society, explain that statement in a way that makes some kind of sense. Either being a single parent is intrinsicually a problem, in which case all single parents fail their children, or for some reason there is more focus on the failure of single parents which leads to this erroneous belief that being a single parent is necessarily a threat to society if I accept that society is indeed under some kind of threat, which is a dubious statment at best.

Now, I konw of lots of single parents who have been not only adequate parents, but extremely successful and good ones, the notion that all single parents fail their children simply can't be true. The only true statement one can make is that there are some parents who are not adequate to the task of bringing up children. These people may be single parents, or they may be one part of a couple or they might be both parts of a couple the one common factor though, is that they are ####### parents, period.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

No, that doesn't illustrate being a better parent by being with in a partnership, it illustrates having more resourses. More resources does not equal better parenting. Some people manage extremely well with very limited resources, others squander and waste large amounts of resources. Poor people can bring up very happy, healthy children, rich people can bring up brats. Nothing you posted is proof that two parents is better.

I'm a poor person. My husband adds no resources and, in fact, is more of a drain on our resources.

Resources are not limited to cash.

Presumably all widowed parents should rush out and find husbands/wives because they are failing their children and being selfish?

The fact is that in most instances that people become single parent families, that is the best situation for that family to be in, regardless of whether a different adult figure providing extra help might or might not lead to a better situation for these people.

Your mention of poor and rich confused me. I agree that having my husband here adds non-monetary resources to our household, resources that one person, by themselves, cannot provide. That was my entire point.

I'm sure that, though I didn't even know it, I meant exactly what you said about widows and widowers. I'm sure I meant I was failing my daughter and being selfish when I was raising my daughter alone.
