I personally object to these race based gift when they become entangled with "The State".

SUch is the case below were a Donor pledges a $1000 dollars for collage to any BLACK MALE who can make it out of high school. Family income or social advantage plays no part you just hafta be a Black male.

THe wrongness of this "Race based giveaway" is that it is using the State as a conduit.... that is the part that is wrong.

Could I approach the School with an offer to give a Grand to any white or Asian kid for making it out of school or even on the basketball team?

They would never even consider it.

but under this program,

Poor Hispanic or white kid gets nothing Middle class Black kid gets a grand.

Discrimination, CMS style

Charlotte–Mecklenburg Schools sure has a strange definition of discrimination. To understand it, you can't listen to what school administrators say. You've got to watch what they do.

Take a look at the fate of three programs recently, and you'll see it in action. Last week, construction magnate C.D. Spangler made a bizarre offer of a $1,000 scholarship to every black male who graduates from West Charlotte High School. If you've got the wrong equipment, if you're a black female from the same neighborhoods that feed the school, to hell with you. Hispanic students at the school actually fail to graduate at a higher rate than black students do, but to hell with them, too.

Spangler can do whatever he wants with his money, and if he gave it away for race- and sex-based scholarships through a private fund to anyone who showed up with a diploma without involving the school system bureaucracy directly, that would be fine with me. Instead, Spangler had all the CMS brass, especially superintendent Peter Gorman, practically peeing in their pants over the program. Gorman gushed about the idea in the Charlotte Observer. Spangler took a photo-op media tour around town, and was featured on the front of the CMS Web site.

Read more into the piece and you will see they canceled a similar program which awarded grants to the top 5% grade earners.... why was it canceled.... Because it "discriminated" against those who did not earn it.

(no kidding.)

Danno, once again you either failed to read the article you yourself posted, or you have a serious reading comprehension problem. What is it about private scholarship that you don't understand? How is this private scholarship "entangled with The State?"

Of course, people on this board know exactly why you singling out a race-based scholarship instead of scholarships based upon anything else. Next time, try not to look so foolish by attempting to cover up your blatant prejudice with a fig leaf like "entangled with The State."

Oh, and Danno....it's college...not "collage."

How do you know they wouldn't consider it? Did you get a second mortgage on the trailer and try it?

Wrong again, Danno. It was not a "similar program." It wasn't even close. And it didn't "award grants" to anyone at all. Sheesh...

(no kidding.)

Now Danno, be a good boy and go back and sit in the corner. And, don't forget your cap.

From a Western point of view, yes Absolutely. From my point of view, hell no. The only people who feel "sorry" for Africans living their hand-to-mouth existence are Westerners, they don't feel sorry for themselves, they have been living in mud huts, catching and growing their own food for centuries and are just fine without interference. They lived like that when the first European ship hit shore there hundreds of years ago, and still do the same today. I know my opinion is controversial but I truly believe the way these people choose to live is in their blood, just like you can't make an Italian stop liking pasta or get an Irishmen to stop drinking beer, no matter where you move them

And the stereotypes never stop.

Free Spirit, Do you think of these lines all by yourself?

:wow:

And the stereotypes never stop.

Neither do the deep one-liners.

..affirmative action will not cure individual ignorance.

I, along with my black friends/family still assert that affirmative action is inherently racist, does more harm than good.

But my opinion is JUST as valid if my black friends/family didn't agree, or if I didn't know any.

What rubbish. Who is advocating that affirmative action will cure ignorance.? You can take your straw man argument somewhere else because it won't fly here. Where do you get this stuff anyway?

Am I to believe that since my previous post, you called your Black friends and family to find out whether or not they "still assert that affirmative action is inherently racist? Gimme a break!

You refuse to say whether your Black friends or family members have been discriminated against. If they have been discriminated against, wouldn't it seem rather strange to you that they would think affirmative action is racist? Next, you will be telling me that there is no discrimination in America today, and that everyone is playing on a level playing field...and that your Black friends and family agree!

If a person is discriminated against, how can there be equal opportunity?

There can be no equal opportunity if people are being discriminated against, but discrimination is illegal, with or without Affirmative Action. With or without Affirmative Action, there is recourse for people who have been discrimated against, and Affirmative Action does not stop discrimination. It addresses statistics.

Affirmative Action, or something like it was necessary to force doors to be opened. However, it has ALWAYS been racist/sexist in its very design, and it is no longer necessary.

There are bigots everywhere, and there always will be. Affirmative Action has not changed that and will not change that. There should be protections against discrimination, but Affirmative Action is not designed to address incidences of discrimation.

Affirmative action is not about stopping discrimination nor eliminating bigotry, unless one is speaking about it only in the broadest sense. It's designed to address the byproducts of discrimination and bigotry. It helps level the playing field and it is still needed in America today.

The covert discrimination that I see in the workplace today would be difficult, if not impossible, to remedy through the court. That's another reason why affirmative action is needed.
