Yes it is, I believe the scale is still heavily tipped to favor whites, unless, that is, if you ignore the historical context. Which is exactly what everyone is debating. If you don't accept that blacks are still at a disadvantage as a result of decades of systemic discrimination, then you will not agree with affirmative action.

How so?

Just in case many have not heard the newsflash, you have three legal options in life.

1. Learn a skill (trade)

2. Start a business of your own

3. Further your education

It's not rocket science by any stretch and hundreds of millions of people, both in this country and abroad, do it daily; including many African Americans. I agree that the poor in general do not receive the assistance that someone of similar circumstances receives in Australia. What I will never agree is that anyone attempting any of the above would be turned down just because they are black. The reality is that you have to want to do one of those three. Yes, that includes speaking, behaving and dressing in the appropriate manner suitable for the workplace. For many in ghettos, obviously crime, living off the government and the sale of narcotics is clearly more important to them.

What do these statistics have to do with how many Blacks you know? My guess is that you don't know any of the 56%.

A lot actually. Your experience and exposure will be totally different to that of my own.

They wouldn't, today. But they would have been in the past. A fact which has contributed to the state of the black community, which you have commented on. Affirmative action is an attempt to break the vicious cycle.

Only goes to show how wrong you are :D...

I don't need to handicap myself to make myself equal to them. We are equals as is. And yes, they are all aware of my opinion, and go figure...they agree.

Did you notice that you sidestepped my comments? You failed to address the issue of discrimination in America today.

As for your Black friends/family, are you saying that none of them have ever been discriminated against?

Fine, life is not fair to whities!

Um that is not the point. Whites and Asians didn't get where they are by crying like babies about racism or because they were told to have their own table and section. Heck that would be an honor for Aussies like myself.

Furthermore, if Aussies had the similar pathetic attitude to the world, particularly England, for the way they were treated, we would not have ended up where we are. Instead of bitching about the past, we worked hard and acquired our respect and success through our progress and actions.

In 2010, who is not allowing anyone to accomplish whatever they want? Seriously, I'm really interested.

As I said before, I'm aware of the past, but it has no relevance in today's world, imo. And I do think the general opinion of 'blacks need these programs or else they cannot compete with whites' is inherently racist, and actually does more harm than good.

I have to agree with Lisa on this.

I understand it was needed 20 years ago, however, America has reached a point where regardless of skin color, anyone can succeed. To deny this and fall back to racism to explain African Americans in ghettos is simply disingenuous. It doesn't take a genius to realize that a lot of people residing in ghettos are not interested in progressing or improving. It's also why their areas are rundown and look like a war zone in a third world country. Surely racism is not to blame for crime and the utter destruction of their areas. A can of paint cost about $20 a walmart. A few nails and a hammer even less than that.

Like many European migrants, my folks migrated to Australia with $10 and the clothes on their back. These working class areas are now some of the most expensive areas in Melbourne and Sydney, worth well into the millions. Why? Basically because they cherished the areas and looked after them. With they money they earned working, they built bigger and better homes. Not rocket science. Furthermore, Aussies were also extremely racist towards them (look up Wogs. N---r equivalent term).

Here is another example. DC had the extreme makeover show in the city not too long ago. Do you realize that they had to hire security and police to stop certain people cough cough from stealing the equipment and supplies? Supplies that are going to a good cause, to charity, might I add. How bloody pathetic is that? Time the ghetto is held accountable for their actions or lack of.

So, you don't have any Black friends nor family. Thanks for confirming that.

Yeah, I don't pick friends or spouses based on skin color or dating trends. Rest assure, any Caucasian with artificially enlarged lips, which are dog-ugly, will never be my friend.

I have two friends from South Africa living in Australia that are extremely dark. The irony, they cannot stand the AA gansta clown attitude that plagues America. Not sure about Washington state, with the 4% and all, but such ghetto idiocy definitely plagues the DC area and so forth.
