So at the football game today someone asks me where my accent is from, I said South Africa, the person goes: "Oh, so you're African-American now?"

That was hilarious, got me thinking, hell yes! I guess I am, I was actually born in Africa so I definetely have the right to call myself African-American, more so than anyone not born there who call themselves AA.

Only those born in Africa can be called African-American if they are now Americans.

I had a white South African bra that would call himself an AA.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Guess that would make me African-American too. Born & bred in Cape Town.

MIL told me a story about a young South African woman in Florida who applied for a scholarship at one of the Universities. Apparently she was awarded it and when they saw her ... well, you know the rest. Apparently, they could not take it away from her because technically she qualified as African American.

Is this an urban myth, I wonder?

Mental note to self: Shani is in Florida ...

I'm also an African American despite the fact that I have never been to Africa and look white. There is no way to officially prove or test if someone is an African American. Genetically there are no tests. In terms of national origin, many supposed "African Americans" cannot track their heritage back to Africa.

I always check all the boxes. There is no way to prove that I am not.

Woop woop, yeah I noticed a lot of scholarships were going for "minorities" even the ones based on merit - GPA etc. strange but true. Seriously, just for the heck of it, I'm gonna apply as an AA and see what happens!!!!

If that's the case you have to start talking right. LOL

So at the football game today someone Ax me where my accent is from.

In America I've noticed a whole lot of this mispronounciation. I get crazy when I hear someone say eCscape instead of eScape or aKs instead of aSk, in fact I dumped a bf once because of this mispronounciation issue, and he was European American or American or White or whatever, but not AA like myself

So...you dumped a boyfriend because of how he says certain words, yet you misspell "mispronunciation" in such a way that it looks like you don't actually pronounce that word correctly yourself.

Shallow much?

Sorry, yes you're right, no coffee yet. It wasn't just the way he spoke it was a few other things too, and besides we only dated for about 3 weeks before I called it off, he was a roommate of one of my friends here and she kept telling me what a sweet guy he was. Yeah he was sweet but he had a kid, crazy ex wife, wore baggy pants and he just kept saying words wrong, It got embarrassing around some of my higher educated friends and I just knew it wouldn't work. shallow I guess but hey, everyone has their basic criteria of what they'd like in their SO, for me being well spoken is one of them.
