Boy, 3, finds gun, shoots self in head

A 3-year-old boy is in critical condition after authorities said he shot himself in the head Saturday.

The incident happened about 11:45 a.m. near the 43000 block of North Friend Avenue in Queen Creek.

Mark Cichoki, a spokesman for Rural/Metro Fire Department, said the boy found a gun under a couch or a bed and pulled the trigger.

Rural/Metro responded, and the boy was taken by helicopter to Maricopa Medical Center.

Cichoki said the boy was breathing but suffering massive injuries.

Actually kids die many times more often... not from guns found in the home but from poisons, pools, electric devices and the list goes on and on.

I forget the number now but, I was astounded to learn how many toddlers drown in those plastic 5 gal. buckets.

The Kid leans in to play in the water and tips right over and then can't get out with no one to hear his gurgling breaths it is over fairly quickly.

For some reason "Kid dies in bucket" will not get near the head lines or attention as "kid finds gun, shoots self" does.

This of course gives us a false impression of the frequency at which these two events happen.
