Hi I am just wandering if you can claim on your taxes if you support (send money) to Philippines for a step child of my wife who is now here. He will be coming soon but I was laid off at the time she got her visa.

nope... read the dependent rules... there is amongst other things... a requirement that the child be a resident in your household for at least 1/2 the year

In addition to this, the child must be a US citizen, US resident alien, US national, or resident of Canada or Mexico. There is an exception for adopted children who have lived with you for the entire year. His step-child isn't going to qualify as a dependent until the child comes to the US, acquires LPR status, and lives with him for 1/2 year.

This is all spelled out in Publication 501 from the IRS.
