In similar news - last night on the local station, it was reported that a certain school district has decided to pull all copies of Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary from the classrooms because somebody complained about one of the words as being inappropriate for children to read about.

That makes me highly suspicious of the lass in Spring - she hasn't the skills to do the proper research, and since it's a problem, she should be immediately removed from the Board.

hmmm.

Saw that, thought "how stupid". How can children learn if their dictionaries are redacted. The idiocy that goes on...

I don't get how people can be vehemently for the first amendment when it comes to things like hate speech, but equally vehemently against it when it comes to allegations of political bias.

Hell, look at the furore over Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction". Anyone would think she squatted down on stage and took a dump on live TV.

In fairness, elementary schools are not typically bastions of free speech.

Not typically, but they're worrying about something that's ridiculous. Even *if* the two books were written by the same guy and even *if* there were marxist subtexts in the kids book, so what?

What effect do they think this is likely to have on small kids? I mean, there are pagan subtexts in Where the Wild Things are, yet after all the $hit that Maurice Sendak got for that in the 60's and 70's, there are still fools who prattle on about indoctrination by childrens stories.

Its the same misconception that George Orwell had - when he wrote that kids who read those pro-empire boys adventure books (the sorts of things written by H Rider Haggard and Rudyard Kipling) would turn into fascists. How wrong he was.

The false premise is that simply reading something is automatically going engender a sympathy with the subject matter, not only that, a depth of sympathy that will expel every other thought and affiliation previously held. That's nuts.

Yep. They don't know what can of worms they just opened themselves up to.

I'm curious to know what basis such decisions are made on. Why is it, for example, that C.S. Lewis' Christian allegories are fine, but a picture book with a pagan or Marxist subtext isn't ?

Its doubly silly that the people who come up with these arbitrary standards never bother to read or watch the thing that they're objecting to. Just look at the stupidity over Harry Potter's "promotion" of witchcraft.
