As a new immigrant, what made you realize which political party in the USA you belonged to?

I have a list on what I agree/disagree on with either party, so up to now I have not decided which party I feel more drawn to.

Just wondering if any other new immigrants are experiencing the same dilemma and what made you decide on either party.

My suggestion: determine whether the state you live in has closed or open primaries.

If it has closed primaries, it's important that you register with the party for which you want to make a choice in the primaries, since in such a state only registered Republicans can vote in Republican primaries, and similarly for Democrats.

If you live in an open primary state, it really doesn't matter how you register (unless you plan to get very active in politics). You can vote in either party primary regardless of registration, and in fact you can be an unregistered voter and still vote in a primary of your choice.

Inevitably, you won't agree with 100% of the issues espoused by either party, or by any candidate. That's the nature of the political system. The idea is to find a party that most generally aligns with your perspective on the issues. Also, by all means feel free to vote against a candidate of your party in a general election regardless of how you register. I'm a registered Democrat but have voted Republican in races where I felt the GOP was running the better person.

scandal's response is good.

Also - there are some POV's that are so unacceptable to one party that you by default belong with the other.

Here is an example of something that would essentially disqualify you from being a Democrat. This is the kind of analogy only a Republican (puke) would make.

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer has compared giving people government assistance to "feeding stray animals."

Bauer, who is running for the Republican nomination for governor, made his remarks during a town hall meeting in Fountain Inn that included state lawmakers and about 115 residents.

"My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed. You're facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don't think too much further than that. And so what you've got to do is you've got to curtail that type of behavior. They don't know any better," Bauer said.

In South Carolina, 58 percent of students participate in the free and reduced-price lunch program.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Excellent example.

The problem with feeding stray animals and welfare beneficiaries is not that they breed, it's that they keep coming back for more.

Although breeding is also a problem.

maybe because you don't provide excuses for the poor... liberals do that, republicans do not.

I see ! :D yes, no excuses, no excuses :protest:

I'm for living within ones means, you want more money to keep up with the Jonese's and you wanna live in this materialistic society, go get yourself an education or invent something or start a business, don't expect a free handout for every damn thing from people who do decide to. I see too many people here wearing really nice shoes when claiming to be poor and hungry, their "wants" are far more prioritized than their "needs", I know how little a human being really needs to survive and be happy on this earth, it really aint all that much, IMHO it's about greed and just wanting materialistic stuff (they can't afford!) more than taking care of their basic needs that leads to "poverty" here in America.

But then I'm also pro-choice when it comes to abortion and don't give a flying ** who decides to marry whom, no matter what sex.

Free education would be great as I'm all for merit and also so there can be even fewer damn excuses.

Maybe I will be an independant.

 I like your hands-off approach, lol !! Unfortunately politics do affect our every day lives so it does interest me.

I just found it interesting that I've already been labelled as a member of one party on VJ even though I have not even made up my own mind yet.

Abortion should be given to rape victims.

exclusively? Not to a drug addicted alcoholic girl who got herself knocked up by her bf out on parole too?

I'm pro choice all the way, I'm just thankful that I've never been in that situation where I've had to make the horrible decision, but definetely pro choice... over population and people who shouldn't be having kids that do are big enough reasons for me.

Just thankful you are, god forbid if you're raped.

I'm not pro choice. Give those rape victims to decide if they want the baby or not, instead of forcing them to carry a child which may lead to different pyschological problems. Psychological problems can be carried onto the children when they grow up. Give these people their choice.
