I have a question, I am wanting to go to India to visit my Husband. I have changed my last name to my married name on my SS, DL, bank account etc... BUT I have not changed my name on my Passport. I have just had my passport a little over 1 year and when I went to change it they told me I would have to file for a new one because it had been 6 months after I recieved my Passport when I put in the request. Well this is no issue.. except, I am wanting to go see my hubby in the next 2 months, and I dont think that I would have my passport back in time.... and then I would still have to send off for a visa also...

So, my question is.... Is it going to matter that I still have my maiden name on my passport when all my other documents have my married.... And when I file for my Visa, should I do this in my married or my maiden name?

Or, should I scratch my plans on visiting my hubby until after I change my name on the passport?

Purchase your airline ticket in the same name that is on your passport as those must agree due to airline regulations. Since the visa will be issued to the name in your passport that will have to be the one that you use. Bring a copy of your marriage certificate that will show your name change from your maiden name to your married name. That should provide the link between the name on your passport and ticket and the name on your DL and other identification. You should be able to use your passport as your identification document, though, so the issue of a different name may never come up. Enjoy your visit.

Have your passport expedited. You pay a bit more but you can have it in just 2-3 weeks. I received mine in less than 3 weeks. They have a box on the passport application where they ask you about the date you intend to travel. They have that because what you are asking is very common and that's why they put that on the application, so you can have your passport in time. I would not complicate myself with marriage certificates and other docs to prove it's who u say you are, since you can easily avoid this issue and have your passport in the mailbox pretty fast. You can have your passport changed in time. As for what names to use, use the one that's current, in your case, the married name on all applications. If u have other old docs to change, you can do that in time! Also, if u purchase ur plane ticket online, use the same name as the one in your renewed passport, just to avoid confusion and delay at the airport. Good luck and don't worry that much:)

You can apply in person at the Regional Passport Office in your region and can get it within a day based on your travel date.

NEED A U.S. PASSPORT IMMEDIATELY?

You should make an appointment to be seen at a Regional Passport Agency only if:

The U.S. passport is needed in less than 2 weeks for international travel

The U.S. passport is needed within 4 weeks to obtain a foreign visa

Hope this helps.....Good Luck! Thanks, Raj
