Hey guys,

Finally heading to Oregon after 3.5 years. Yup, hubby has been doing the jig since he arrived here in the Philippines. I'm moving to Central Oregon in the Bend area, and I was wondering if anybody from VJ is close to where I'll be at. We're leaving for the US on January 25 and it sure would be nice to have someone to keep in touch with when I get there. If you've got tips, advice, or funny stories to share, sure would appreciate any you can throw my way.

I lived in Bend for about 3 years. Nice little place, you will like it. Tends to be costly though... best have a well paying job...

One major drawback is that in the winter time, all the mountain passes close so you are trapped until they can be cleared. Sometimes that took a week or more...

There is a small airport just north of Bend, in Redmond, if you really need to get out.

A good hospital and good skiing too!

The surrounding country is volcanic and the center of town is dominated by a massive cinder cone thats pretty cool...

In the summer time things get a bit too... brown... for me, not much rain. If there is a forest fire within 100 miles the air turns blue from the smoke so if you have breathing issues its not pleasant... but then, the same thing happened while I was living in Alaska so I was used to it.

Good Luck, safe journey!

My wife is also from Tacloban City. Even though we are in Missouri, If you would like to contact her just PM me and I will give you our Phone number.

There will be alot of changes that you will go through. Homesickness is one of them. Patience and understanding is the key to overcome being homesick. Cultural differences is another change. You and your SO will have alot of laughter and frustration going through this. It all can be overwhelming at times, but believe me you both will get through it.

Keep the fire burning in your relationship. Go out and explore your new surroundings. Find a Filipino or Asian store in your area. Learn how to cook American food and sharpen your skills cooking Filipino food. I could go on and on, but I think you see what I mean. Have fun and enjoy your new life here in the USA.

Don't forget to communicate, communicate and communicate!!!!

Yeah I am a beaver, and used to live in the valley. Yes there is a cultural shock in Oregon, coz I had it when I first moved there from Hawaii. Bend is a nice area, that can get cold in the winter. I am not to sure how much Filipinos are around, probably alot less than where I live now. However I grew to like Oregon, except for the 6 months of rain in the winter. People are nice there, so you should be fine.

Hi Ria,

welcome to the US!

I'm in Oregon, in the Lake Oswego Area :) sorry though but I can't tell how far it is from Bend (have to ask hubby later). Anyway, been here for more than a year now, and I can relate to you wanting to have Pinay friends over here. I've seen a lot of snow during my first year, and some snow this year, hehe . . . I have some Pinay friends who are new to Oregon too, most of them from the Portland area, and we meet every once in a while to go malling, shopping or to just hang out. If you want to keep in touch, just pm me when you get here.

Enjoy the new chapter of your life with your hubby.

tbat was my POE last year but we're here na sa NC. Oregon is such a beautiful place. The trees specifically...ahhh parang God-made landscape along the road. The place is really nice with few Pinays there, I met one in Medford who owns a home based Pinoy store kaya lang sobrang lang it was a long drive...roadside pa lang fantastic na...

All I can say is good times in Oregon, the best State na napuntahan ko so far (aside from Las Vegas he he) pero it's nice there talaga, tahimik hindi masyadong crowded. Puro mga White America kalimitan...

Try to go to theatre plays, yun ang interest ng mga tao dun (at least upon my observation). I attended several plays. I also went to some theatre to watch films...
