No religion (but not in a John Lennon kind-of way)

That's just pie in ths sky. Humans are always searching for answers and religion gives answers - regardless of how flawed the interpretation becomes.

One would like to imagine though. Sad to think that my children will have to deal with religion.

I don't think religion is the culprit - just that far too many humans have used it as an excuse for their behavior.

If we teach our children to think for themselves - to never put blind faith in someone else's understanding of truth, then religion could be an enlightening experience for them. Dogmatism is deadly to the soul.

Sooooo. You TROLL around Christian Forums. How interesting. Anyone can TROLL around a forum and cut and past passages to make someone look bad. Congratulations. Done any TROLLING around this forum lately?

But if you were Christian, you would believe and know that when Jesus died on the cross, he said he would come again to judge the living and the dead and the end times began at that moment. Not even the angels in heaven know God's plan for the world. I personally hope that when Jesus does come again, that I have been a faithful enough servant too him. I can understand their excitement, even though I think it is a bit premature. They do not wish harm or suffering of others, they simply feel it is a sign of what is to come and are excited to see God's plan to save the living unfold.

"Religion is the opiate of the masses." - Karl Marx

Yes, I agree that religion was created to answer the "who, what, when, where, and why" of life on this blue-green marble. Some of us are lucky enough to not care. I feel that questioning such things is a waste of time, as NO one will ever KNOW the answer. "Why are we here?" I don't care. I AM here, and that is all that concerns me. "How did I get here?" The normal way. "How did the Earth form?" Who cares? It's here; enjoy it. Unless you were present at the time that Earth popped into existence, then you ain't EVER going to *know* how it got here.

My philosophy is: I'm here, the Earth is here, the Earth is a pretty swell place. I'm here to live, love, see, hear, smell, taste, and then die. Why would I need to know more than that? Why would I want to waste my limited time on this planet pondering it? Most importantly, why would I want to live a "cautious" mortal life, just so I don't suffer some theorhetical horrible fate after I die?

Granted, if living in such a way is what makes a person happy, then more power to them. I don't care if other people are religious. As long as they keep it to themselves; ie: don't try to convert me, blow me up, or take over my little corner of the world.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

Wow, being excited about eternal life on a message board IS just as abominable as blowing up anyone that believes differently than you. Thank you Fishdude, I can always count on you to set me straight.

I LOVE how this person just assumes they will NOT be among the damned if the world were to end soon! Like it's a given that they would be chosen for Heaven if such circumstances were to unfold because they're just SO good and SO Godly and righteous  Yeah, anyone who gets all happy and excited to see innocent people getting killed deserves eternal happiness alright! ...

Something very bad happened to Christianity about a hundred years ago. I think it was the Calvinists who came up with the misguided idea that a Christian is 'saved' (meaning they have a one-way ticket to heaven) if they simply ask Jesus into their heart. You can't have faith without works or works without faith. Many Christians today believe they belong to the exclusive club of heaven and that they're the only ones with valid memberships. They're in for a big surprise in the afterlife.

Agreed. There is most definitely a lunatic fringe of fundamentalist christianity plagueing certain areas of the United States. It's hardly new of course - the KKK were "doing God's work" for quite a long time.

But is it representative? From the majority of people I've met and spoken to both on and off VJ, I'd say no.

Of course, it won't be long before someone brings up the 'christians don't blow stuff up'. I'd agree. But I guess you have to ask - do citizens of a wealthy first world country really have any need to?

Seriously, why are you trying to pull parallels here? I wouldn't know what kind of Christian thisis...but to allude to the fact that they might blow chit up if they were in another country (which I think is what you're implying here) is a bit stupid.

there are fanatics in every religion. Do they all have to be qualified as 'equally crazy' to be pc?

I once tried to post on rapture ready. They banned me in like 10 seconds flat  But then again, they also ban catholics, lutherans, methodists, and just about anyone who isn't salivating over the possiblity of the rapture at any second.

I found christianforums.com to be much more hospitable, but even then, I always walked a fine line. Thankfully, I've cut the umbillical cord. VJ is the only forum for me now

In the exact words that were quoted from that forum, I don't see anyone belittling others or saying anything offensive. They are saying what they believe, they aren't saying they are going to kill others while saying they are excited about stuff. You just wanted to post things they said that you think are crazy, but that is your opinion. How those words are hate-mongering, etc I have no idea.

I also find it interesting how people, who do not like when their religion is made fun of or talked badly about, jump on the opportunity to make fun of people following a different religion. Discussing is different than just belittling, which some people should know very well.

Yes there are crazy people in every religion. But Steven_and_Jinky (who I really have no problems with) is basically saying that anyone who believes that there is only one truth is infantile and misguided. I believe in only one truth, and one way...and I am allowed to. :innocent: Anyone can think it's crazy, but why insult the beliefs just for the sake of the beliefs that you don't like, which aren't wishing harm on anyone.

I'd definitely agree, by the name of their website, that they ARE loopy. Now those are some hate-mongerers.

Yes. It's kind of telling that Fishdude would point out the ones that are excited about the rapture, but not the ones that "hate fags."

I agree 100%. Now will you condemn the Islamic terrorists?
