Its fingerprinting... for AOS yes its a requirement.

Yes, an appointment will be made for you. When you submit your application to USCIS, they will send you a letter telling you the date and time for you to go to either the USCIS office or an Application Support Center (ASC) at a different location and get your fingerprints digitally recorded, and often have your photograph taken as well. Biometrics appointments are absolutely painless and one of the easiest parts of the process so there is no need to worry. If you can't make the date you are scheduled, you can always request to change it without a problem.
