Attacker Breaks Berlusconi's Nose

By STACY MEICHTRY

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was rushed to the hospital Sunday evening with a fractured nose and bloodied lip after a man threw a statuette at the premier's face from close range at the end of a political rally.

Mr. Berlusconi had been shaking hands with supporters in a dense crowd when a man wielding a statuette broke through the crush of people and assaulted the premier. Mr. Berlusconi's bodyguards hustled the premier into the back of a car while police detained the attacker, identified as 42-year-old Massimo Tartaglia. Police said Mr. Tartaglia didn't have a criminal record.

Mr. Berlusconi, 73, will remain in charge of Italy's government while he is in the hospital.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is being rushed away after a man struck him in the face in a Milan square.

A billionaire media mogul with a penchant for making controversial public statements, he has long been one of the most polarizing figures in Europe's political landscape. Sunday's attack, however, shows how tensions in Italy are running higher than ever.

"This hurts the country," said Paolo Bonaiuti, a spokesman for Mr. Berlusconi's conservative government. "What worries us is the climate of violence."

Yeah.... its kinda hard to be sympathetic really, isn't it.

Yeah, I guess some could say the same thing if some nut smashed in Obama's face and broke a couple of teeth. That wouldn't be the popular reaction but some on the Left tend to enjoy some violence against polticians they don't like.

Oh what-the-####-ever Dave.

Berlusconi is one of, if not the most corrupt politician in charge of a developed world country. If you want to make this about American partisan politics then you're just a moron.

BBC reported this morning he had a history of mental illness.

Sounds to me like he was the sanest person in the crowd though...

I wouldn't have pictured you as the backer of violence against democratically elected leaders. If leaders are corrupt, they should face the voters in a free and fair election. Anything less and you're a simpleminded thug giving a thumbs up to every guy with a grudge.

BTW, Italy is known as nation that survives not because of its politicians but in spite of them.

Clearly you are the type of person who takes a one-line comment as a manifesto on a person's entire belief system.

Again - you are a moron.

Wow too bad they couldn't have just voted the creep out of office.

They did.

This is the second coming.

Imagine if, a few years after Watergate that Nixon got voted back into office. That's Berlusconi for you.

True that. Quite the azzhat and all. I just think what happened, deserved or not, was inappropriate.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I'll make a note that one when some other folks get bashed in the face that you have a higher regard for. Don't expect much more sympathy from me than you expressed for Berlusconi.
