Travel with 2 countries passport???

My husband's friend, a Nigerian who is now a US citizen, is making his first trip back to Nigeria as a citizen. He has this plan (which I think is CRAZY!!!) to travel to Nigeria with a Nigerian passport, so that he doesn't have to get a visa and then for his return trip home use his US passport. I don't know the answer for certain, but to me that sounds ILLEGAL! Surely Homeland Security doesn't want people to have and travel with two seperate passports.

What do y'all know.

As a citizen of another country (that recognizes the right to dual cicizenship of course) it is my understanding that you have the duty and the right to enter the country which you have citizenship in (in this case Nigeria) and to inform that country that you, as a citizen have entered. There are rights and responsibilities that go with citizenship and if you are a citizen of a country you are visiting, you have to travel and enter as such...

To do otherwise would be like entering the US on a Nigerian passport. If you have a Nigerian passport you have to enter Nigeria with it... Other countries, it is your option as to which you use, that is the benefit of dual citizenship.

So no, they are not doing anything illegial. But when they return to the USA, they must use the US passport...

Of course all this is also dependent upon whether Nigeria recognizes the right to dual citizenship or to possess dual passports... I am not sure of Nigerian Law, but in Italy, if you have an Italian passport, you must show it upon entry to Italy.

ok thanks. just seems to me that Homeland Security would have issues with that! Also, I know I had to register my passport number when booked my airline tickets, so how do you put that you're using two?

We'll be in the same situation in the future as my husband intends to build a house in Nigeria and be bi-continental.

How does this work?

If I have both a US and Nigerian passport and I hope to travel to Nigeria, what passport do I show when I go to check in with the airline? What passport do I show at the border control? Et al.

I showed my American passport here at the airport, then I showed both of them, when I get in and out of Nigeria, and showed my American passport again, when am back in the country, with no problem.
