I am a bit confused abt the cut-off date for registering selective service. i was on H1 for 2 years then became PR on 8/8/08 (date shown on my gc), my birthday is 7/5/82. so i became PR after my 26th birthday and didnt register for selective service. did i interpret and do the whole thing correctly?

On the date you became a LPR, you were 27 years, 4 months, 29 days old, well above the 26 year old limit. You are okay, don't sweat it. Really don't have to sweat it period, if you are a female. Only males have to register.

It's interesting than no one filed some kind of discrimination lawsuit about that... I guess you only ###### about equal rights when it benefits you, not the other way around..

Not sure if I am amused or bugged about the post cards my boys had received when they turned 18 as natural born USC's.

We know your is name is, you live at so and so, you were born on a date so and so, worked out to be 18 years prior to them receiving their card, we know your SSN is, but if you fail to sign and return this card in ten days, you can get up to one year in prison and a $10,000.00.

Apparently selective service does not keep track of LPR, would think the USCIS would report them when they first received their green cards. There was just a small message to that effect they have to register that came with a brochure when you first receive your green cards.

Has me wondering if the USCIS keeps track of anything, like giving you a warning your green card is going to expire, or demanding a copy of that green card or USC certificate in case yours is lost or stolen.

Read that the greatest number of illegals here are due to overstayed I-94's, not everyone crosses the dessert, so apparently they are not keeping track of that either. But they do ask you on your application if you had ever overstayed your I-94, is that because they don't know?

Really a screwed up agency like most of our other governmental agencies.

That's pretty stiff...

Actually USCIS does register you with the selective service...sometimes. I got my GC in October 2006 (was 24 at the time) and I revcieved my SS registration card in mail in the end of November. I never registered myself because I had no clue I had to. So in a way I'm thankful to USCIS (or whoever else did that) for doing it for me.

I never recieved any reminder to file I-751, but I read about the people who did on this forum. I assume that much like with other USCIS stuff it'#######-or-miss.

That is very true...

The whole "register" thing is messed up, in todays world you don't have to register but you are denied a whole hosts of services, namely student loans and grants. No one is going to fine you or send you to jail and that is why "they" ask you to do it yourself. Also when you first get your DL (assuming your over 18 but not over 26) they will often register you (prob what happened to you). I think they should simply force people to register upon A: Entering college even they will pay themselves. B: Getting a DL. C: File a tax return. Because lets face, if they started the draft again everyone would be forced to register. So why not just simply the process and give us the perks of registering if we would be forced to do so in a time of war anyway??? I also wanted to say that although they might not fine you or send you to jail now... if the draft became active again they would start fining and sending ppl to jail.

It's a question of risk and whether you want to take it or not. On the USC certificate, says unlawful to copy this document, but yet they verbally tell you to make copies of it in case you lose it, or else you will have problems renewing it. In a court of law, the prosecutor need only say, it clearly states on the document unlawful to make copies of this document, and your only defense would be hearsay, that you were told at the oath ceremony to make copies of it, in particular if you have to send the original to the DOS for the passport and they do have a reputation for losing that valuable document.

On our Wisconsin marriage certificate, states that up to a $10,000 fine for copying this document, but the USCIS wants copies of it, plus my wife's country wanted a copy of that as well for her foreign passport application, SS justs looks at it, but they made a copy of it for their records. To avoid any conflict, even though I never heard of anyone being fined, paid the state eight bucks for their copy. Wasn't about to take a risk for eight bucks.

Same with that selective service postcard, fine for not registering was definitely on the postcard. Was a prepaid postcard, maybe we should have sent it back via registered mail, but my boys just signed it and dropped it in the mailbox. If lost via the mails, also known to happen, maybe they could have been fined 10,000 bucks. Read that some IO's wanted proof that the applicant indeed did register, first thought that entered my mind is that my boys don't have any proof of that, but gather there is some website you can go to get that that proof. Is there a law that states everyone had to own a computer and be on the net?

Have to say without a computer, I would be dead with immigration, step daughter was very pleased to get her own computer in her own room, in her country computers are four times more expensive than here. Was always fighting her mom and brother to get some time on it. But many people cannot afford to have a computer and especially the outrageous prices they charge to be hooked up to the net.

That bit on illegal immigration in congress a couple of years ago was a bad joke in that congress didn't do anything about it. What else can they do, the laws are already in effect. But one strong point they was never mentioned was enforcing these existing laws. Sure they have some border guards, with some talk about building a fence, but still not the major cause of illegals in this country.

One thing we certainly get from our government is constant threats, with my step daughter still a LPR, have to tell the USCIS constantly where I am at. But thought about my boys with that selective service thing, they are far gone and scattered literally all over the world. But I never recall anything about them having to inform selective service about their whereabouts. It's crazy.

For citizenship - he will need to show that he did register. I believe there is a solution for those who did not file (see the website link posted above for the details).

On the I-485, there is a place in the application where you sign a waiver to allow the USCIS to transmit your info for the purposes of registering for the Selective Service.

They make it sound like they are doing it for you. My husband was 27 when we applied so he was not required to register and did not. However, I just checked his social on the website above and there he was with a registration number and everything. Hmmmmmmmmmmm

It says MATCHED RECORD and that he was registered in Feb of 2008 so that's good to know for if/when he applies for citizenship.
