It if is a real picture then no, it can't be safe for either the overweight passenger, or those around him. The AISLE is BLOCKED. I don't think it can be real though, how would they get the cart with all those delicious drinks and meals to all the passengers?

He is, which is why he looks so tall! And, in all honesty, people tend to look away from things like this, out of embarrassment. If you read the comments after the article on the link, it tells you a bit more about this photo.

The guy in the middle seat next to him was paid off with flight coupons and a guarantee for the next flight and the overweight guy got the two seats. He wasn't made to buy another seat because the flight was fully booked. And yes, the flight was still boarding, apparently.

Fake or not? I really don't know, but I do know that this happens a lot.

Oh Boy, what a GREAT Topic!

I am of average weight/height, even skinny by some standards. It burns my chaps when I get dinged for having my bag 5-10 Lbs overweight, and pay a penalty of $25 bucks. Meanwhile, a 350 Lb man can board the plane with his tiny carry on bag, and ride for the same price as me! Something is WRONG with this pic, particularly the huge fat guy blocking the aisle. Talk about a pink elephant in the room! (pun intended). BIG HEAVY people need to pay more, that is just how it is. Aviation is all about weight, thrust and lift.

I say the only fair way is to treat people AND luggage as cargo, indistisguishable from each other. I say have a discreet platform scale (like how you weigh your check-in bag, and only the worker can see your weight) where the passenger and luggage is weighed standing on it. Each passenger gets a fair travel weight allotment, let's say, uh, 300 Lbs total, person + luggage, and you HAVE to fit into one seat, or pay extra.

Something better than the present system of inequality is needed. Oh, and the privacy and offending issue? Well, they have new xray scanners that show your whole body underneath now, and that's happening NOW.. I dunno, Someone else come up with even a better idea, but this one is mine! Happy Travels!

Not sure the photo is fake or not - if you compare the size of the head of the oversized man with the size of the head of the man in the seat next to him, they are the same size - it is the body that is bigger, not the whole image. This individual really is this big - whether he was on the plane or not, I don't know, but it does look like he is sitting on the arm rest.

How sad and embarrassing for him! I can not help but feel sorry for overweight people. I know some people say it is their own fault, yet alcoholics get sympathy and their addiction is called a desease! I just feel sad for them!

Also feel sorry for the person who has to sit next to him on a 15 hour transcontinental flight! When your weight problem becomes mine. It is said that a man's right to swing his fist ends when it hits another man's face. Same difference. This is a big problem that the airlines refuse to take on for PR reasons!

Airlines should take into consideration every one's comfort on a flight! I have had some crappy flights myself when I have had to put up with other peoples behaviour, smells, noise and so on...but I still feel sad for that guy!

I concur -- buy 2 seats in advance. For your safety/comfort and that of others. Few things as uncomfortable as being squeezed by an overweight woman (in my personal case) on a non-stop from Mexico City to Vancouver.

i had this, from zurich to NYC, and the dude farted the entire flight!
