Green Card holder: Staying outside of US for an extended period of time

Hello,

My mother received a green card at the begging of 2009. Three months later her mother became ill and needed care 24/7. Needless to say my mother returned to Poland to take care of my ill grandmother. She has now been outside of US for over 6 months and it doesn't look like she can come back anytime soon. I know that a permanent resident is required to live in the states for a specific amount of time per year, or the green card can be taken away. I am wondering what can be done in order to ensure that she will not loose her permanent resident status.

yes she could, "google" "maintaining permanent residency" to get an understanding of what is needed to be done
