Seeking info on monitors

I have two laptops at my house that I would like to hook up to a LCD monitor. (Both screens are blank)

One is a fairly new HP that my wife spilled coffee on and now the computer seems to work but the screen is very dark (someone suggestes a backlight is out)

the other a G-3 ibook with a fading screen.

Would any of the newer style monitors work if I make sure if has the VGA chord>?

All brands work the same way, same cable? same hook up?

I thought I would get one off ebay and connect it to the PC that way rather than do repairs on the screens.

On the other hand my G-3 Imac is still humming along though the lack of speed becomes more and more obvious that is is too out dated to even keep up w/ U-tube any more... and so I am getting a new one this week.

yeah. if they have the same connection you have you will be fine. VGA, DVI etc.

What's the best brand of monitor? Oh boy..... lots of opinions. I like Costco for monitors. Ease of return if I don't like it.

I was hoping to find something second hand for like $50 ... thats why I wanted to make sure anyone of them will connect.
