Generally speaking, the US press has more freedom when it comes to libel and defamation (its almost impossible to successfully prosecute someone for that here), and yet this freedom doesn't correlate to increased quality of the news.

The only thing that really matters is the ad rate, and that is based on viewership. If you want critical thinking, look to some of the noncommercial outlets, and then weigh that against what you don't see in the popular media.

I think the commercial media has its uses, just not when someone relies on it exclusively.

Its usually fairly obvious when someone is doing this - they tend to repeat talking points verbatim or otherwise parrot a commentators interpretation of a news story.

NPR is considered too left wing by some right wing extremists although if one actually listens in, the least you hear is a partisan take on the news.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Has there been a libel conviction of Fox News? Thats news to me... But then again you're prone to making up BS

Your paid subscription to XM - Sirius is expiring soon. Better renew so you can listen to more Air America, and America Left!

Oh joe, do be a sport and post where I've made things up. It would probably help if you got a dictionary out and looked up what facts are, and what commentary is. That way, you can discern between my opinion, and when I post facts.

NPR has been castigated in the Bay Area for not being liberal enough, so we listen to Pacifica Radio for the progressive viewpoint. I also enjoy Link-TV, for some world perspective not found anywhere else.

Link-TV is great. I really like the Mosaic news show.

Responding to a question with a question is poor for Joe. He called you out on your ####### and now you can't even own up to it. Find any evidence to prove what he asked you, Otherwise, stfu. Did you happen to visit whitehouse.gov over the past 12 years? It had virtually no information other than a small bio on staff members and highlight points about things they wanted to tout.

I'm sorry what ####### is he calling me on? His posts read like ####### because he doesn't read #######. lol! He didn't even address what Fox News Network has done wrong which I clearly point out in my second post. Anyways I'm not interested in debating off topics in this thread. I'm interested in discussing Fox News and the special privileges they think their network is allowed with newsgathering.

Well the problem started when you posted this very misleading video, to many on the left it was music to there ears, to them it may look like she is hitting the nail on the head but when you dissect it and look at exactly what she is saying its rather laughable.

You pointed out earlier that you were finally glad the media was discussing it or something to that affect. They have been, watch CNN, thoughts and opinions have been all across the board. I know fox news leans to the right, the rights there bread and butter but it is not as bad as people on the left make it out to be, most of who dont really watch foxnews.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

NPR is written off out of hand I think. I agree that it isn't really partisan - and they do report on stories that aren't covered anywhere in the corporate media.

Indeed. I have seriously tried listening for partisan hackery of any sort in their reports. I am still waiting to find commentary at all beyond the reporting.

That does not include local politics... but those are very separate of news reports.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

What special privileges are they asking for? They need no one. They don't even need the President there in order to be on top.

They aren't asking they're taking special privileges in news gathering. The Network promotes, organizes and create events targeting the US government. Then said network reports on said events. The special privilege this network thinks it gets in it's newsgathering is reporting on their own events. It is news they create within their network and branch affiliates and not news they simply report. It's misrepresentation and it's unethical and potentially unlawful if this goes to court as other cases similar to this have. We make laws for citizens not the journalist. Journalist don't have special privileges for gathering news. There are actual statuary laws that if they break they can be brought on criminal charges. Journalist have the same amount of access to information as the citizen no more no less. They have to fill out FOIA forms just like the rest of us to gain access to information.

There are no formal rule of laws as to what is legitimate media yet, but there are discussions as to what are the ethical journalistic standards. Journalist aren't licensed or required to take an exam to meet any particular qualifications to practice their trade. It is their work that defines a legitimate journalist or media. It's true most are in the business to make money and be a watchdog and champion of justice but their main function is to inform the public. Not to have a political agenda within their network that they promote, organize, and report on. That's where the network crosses the line and the White House has said Rupert Murdoch is the enemy because it's his network. All those shows on that network are his liability including all the reporters and commentators.

Sorry I am unsure how I mislead anybody with the video. As I said in my original post if you've seen the video already then sorry for the repeat I'm a little behind in the public discussion of the topic. Please feel free to post the links to others in the news media, such as CNN that you mentioned, discussing the topic. It would help contribute to the conversation and for further analysis.
