Social Security Card Question

My wife entered the US with a J1 Visa. She quickly got her Social Security Card with the “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION" stamp on it. Once we got married we applied for a new SSC because of her name change. It came with her new name and the same “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION" message.

We now have a EAD. Is there a reason to bother getting a new SSC? If we try to get another one before getting the green card, will it still say “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION?"

Even if we get a green card will the same stamp be on there?

Just curious really. I'm sure work will be easy to find with an EAD. Just looking for a little comfort is all I guess.

EAD is not an indication of the person's adjustment of status from non-immigrant to resident... it is the greencard. Language is not removed until greencard

Your wife's immigration status on the current card is J1 now, so I recommend you to go to a local SSA office and update her status to CR1.

You shouldn't have any problem to do so if her status on the SAVE system is already updated (I think it should be by now because she's got her EAD).

You cannot update to a status that the OP is NOT....The OP is NOT CR1. Once green card is received you go and update your status to RESIDENT.

You will have to wait until she gets her green card. Once she has the green card, you go back to Social Security office, bring the green card and they will update her status. They will remove the phrase "valid for work only with DHS authorization" and mail a new SSN card. The social security number itself doesn't change.

I went through this process and was very smooth.

She still needs a separate work authorization to work, so she can't change her SSC yet. The EAD is exactly the DHS authorization, so the SSC should be presented together with the EAD.

She can change her card once her GC arrives.

Awesome! Thanks so much for the responses. We'll wait for her GC and then go get a new SSC.
