Hi, I am here in the US for almost 5 mos.. Now, we were supposed to have AOS but because of some reasons we were way behind.. Anyway, one proof of relationship is to add you or to have a joint account with your husband. THe bank asked us an SSN which I cannot get unless I have my EAD or AOS already. We already went to the SSN office and they told us that we have to adjust first.. So I am really confuse now, is there a possibility I can have my SSN without EAD or AOS? Some people say I can use my Alien #... please give me some ideas...

Also my passport is expiring next year.. We wanted to renew it under my Husbands family name cause I got it before I was married. I didn't renewed it there in the Philippines cause we ddin't had time. Should we renew my passport first before our AOS so my names would be the same as we go through the AOS?

Thank you so much.. Appreciate your help...

You have to have a EAD or GC to get the SS card. Better apply for AOS ASAP.

You can renew PP with your Marriage cert.

hey i am a k1 visa holder too. heres how i got my SSN after a few weeks of my entry.

we first got married a few days after i arrived.

2 weeks later we recieved our marriage certificate.

then went to the closest social security office (in GA state)

bringing my passport and the papers we recieved from chinese consul on which it tells u the process after arriving US

i marked where it says i will have to apply for an SSN

and show the papers to the officer there

then after 1 week i recieved my SSN

the first social security office we went to turned us down, the officer told us to apply for the greencard first and blah-blah

i think these officers dont know a lot about the K1 visa process

u just have to show them the papers

i hope this will help u!

I had the same issue with my bank, but told them the US Government wanted us to have a joint account before getting an SSN. They let me open a joint account with a copy of my wife's passport. I gave the bank the SSN when she got it after receiving the EAD.

If your spouse's bank will not open a joint account find a bank that will.

I am very grateful for all of your responses. It gives us an idea now on how to deal the banks for SSN so as the SSN office itself because they were really turning us down.. We really didn't know what to do since I don't have anything to show here as I cannot have driver's license. insurance and whatever they want to as proof of relationship. Now, we just hoped that they'll allow us to open an account and update it later until we got our AOS.

We thought that because I'm on K3 that it's multiple entry and so we can travel to the Philippines or outside the US without problem. So that's why we got to renew it before then.. Is it true that you have to be in person applying it? THanks again..:)

To Dakine?

So it means that when processing my AOS I have to follow my marriage certificate? I think it also means that I have to renew my passport first before processing the AOS.,, Am I right? Sorry for asking again...

THANKS...

No need to renew your passport before filing to adjust status. Also you can use your maiden name or married name. Depends on which one you want on your GC.

You do not need a SSN or joint bank account to adjust status. Nice, but not needed. Are you k-1 or k-3. (would help if you fill that in, you are NOT N/A) K-3s must have EAD or green card. K-1s can get an SSN before AOS but it must be before 14 days from I-94 expiration...day 1 to 76 of when you arrive. You are too late.

You are eiuther a k-3 and not eligible or a k-1 that ran into an untrained clerk that made things upo rather than check with a supervisor. Too late now.

Do not attempt to change names in anything until you have your green card in hand...it is so much easier then

No, you are wrong.

When filing AOS you can use your maiden name OR your husbands name as you MARRIED name. Your choice. AFTER you have your green card, THEN you make changes to other documents. Green card first. Relax, get one thing done then do the next, there is absolutely no hurry to change your name.

No you don't.. My wife got her SSN 16 hours after arriving in the USA. K-1s are eligible immediately until day 76 (14 days before expiration of the I-94) You should wait until the next day after arrival to allow the SAVE system recording legal entries to the USA to be updated. My wife had her SS CARD in hand in 6 days. The number is all you need and can be obtained the next day after applying by calling or going to the SS office.

This is the only anecdotal report I have read in five years that claims a SS number was obtained the day after arrival in the US.

The advice of a member of Vj who is an employee of the SS administration has always been to wait about 10 days before applying. You will need your passport with I-94 in it and your birth certificate.

I went to get my wife her ssn and I was told that now we are married we can not get an ssn becuase the I-94 has a K-1 stamp and now that we are married the stamp should say K-3. Sounds funny to me but I could get her to even try. Does anyone know if this is the case? should I try again?
