Passports In Maiden Names?

Question for experts on this thread:

I just went to buy tickets for myself and my wife and stepdaughter to go to Thailand for Songkran 2010. My wife just got a new credit card with 0% interest we used to purchase the tickets. Problem is, we purchased my wifes ticket in her married name, (airline required name on credit card to match travelers name), and it is her maiden name showing on her passport - so the name on the tickets and on the passport does not match. It seems to me that I read and or was told that as long as you have a "certified copy" of your marriage certificate attached to the passport we'll be OK. Also, all her other ID (SS Card, DL, Green Card etc), has her maiden name as her "middle" name with my last name - can anyone advise me about this based on "actual experience" rather than conjecture?

On my experience, I purchased ticket on my married name but my passport was still on my maiden name. The thing I've done was brought our marriage certificate and my greencard that shows my new name based on marriage. And I don't got any problem on our departure or arrival in US & Phils. I never done anything because it almost due on our travel date to fix things about my change name.

But when I get back to the US, the first thing I've done was, I contacted Philippine Embassy in Washington DC and renewed my Phils. passport due to being married and change name. So I reported to them about the change name due to marriage, by sending them copy of our marriage cert., pay the fee and then they issued me a new Phils. passport in my married name "EVEN" my passport is not due yet to it's expiration date.

My "actual experience" is that the carrier agent will make the determination. I suggest that you to contact the airline directly to learn how it will be handled at flight check-in in the US.

Also, if there is a passport control check when leaving Thailand you may want to check how it would be interpreted on that end.

There is normally no problem travelling with different names in passport and ticket PROVIDED you have a legal document that verifies the name change .. ie marriage certificate.

When I went back to the UK earlier this year, I did so with a maiden name passport and ticket and a married name green card. While home, I replaced my passport in my married name and returned to the US with the maiden name still on the return portion of the ticket.

Some airlines will require you to speak to a supervisor or the ticketing desk, and others can process you at the check-in desk provided you have all documents. It may be worthwhile phoning your airline (or checking their "name change policy" online) to confirm.

Thanks everyone! I called the airline and USCIS and both said that as long as she has her green card in her married name and a certified copy of the marriage certificate she'll be fine. Thats what I thought, but I wanted to hear it from folks who had actually traveled that way.

I'll leave it to the other posters who gave good advice on the change of name issue. I think you're good to go, no problems.

I usually came to Thailand for a month with Songkran being in the middle and sometimes I bought my ticket at this time of the year.

This year because of work considerations I had to play a little more fast & loose.

I used United a few years back when they were very cheap and the last 2 times I flew Thai Air and that was a very pleasant experience

(please bring back the non-stop Thai Air flights from NYC if they haven't already done that).

This time I'm flying Emirates on October 5 and will stay until October 31.

I'm excited about flying into Dubai at night and seeing all the cool lights.

I'll wave at the camels and Cadillacs as I take off for Bangkok.

I know you've had your question answered, TucsonBill, but I just wanted to agree with the above. I watched one of my family members get denied boarding because of a name discrepancy between the ticket and the passport. We had to scramble to get the airline to reissue the ticket in the passport name. Talk about stressful. lol
