Typed mistake on Fiancee's G-325 (not yet submitted)

Hi everyone,

I've seen a couple mentions of this in the forum but am hoping to get a little case-specific advice.

My fiancee's from Brazil and her mother has a ridiculously long name that I guess has changed over time. She just told me the name she typed on the form (which I now have - she mailed the signed forms) does not match her mother's name on her passport/birth certificate and she wants to use the correct name.

1) Does this really matter enough that we need to change the name? The currently typed name is her Mother's name, but I guess it doesn't match her former name used on the birth certificate/passport (documents which we are not submitting at this stage). Do they use this info (G-325A) to conduct background checks, or just to keep on record?

2) Can I make a change like this to the form she signed, or would she have to make the correction? I've seen references to initialing the changes made. Would I change it and put my initials? Seems a bit strange to have my initials on the form she signed. Was thinking I'd white out the old answer or just put a line through it and write in the "correct" name.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

use a white out and fix the name yourself...

NOOOOOOOOOO Dont use whiteout!.. Call uscis and see what you need to do. I called them about if I needed to make a correction could I use whiteout and they specifically said "NO"! Call them!

Hmmm. I used white out on my fiance's G-325A. I used white out on two of the four forms (I hand wrote the information), and my petition was approved. I've heard of a few people here who have used white out on various forms. It's definitely better if you can avoid it, but people make mistakes. Just my experience/opinion.

What did they tell you to do instead? Thanks.

the purpose of whiteout is to fix errors, what can USCIS do if you call them? lol

Yes, but we all know how uscis like to pick any option to deny a petition and I did not want to give them any excuse to reject my papers, so I called to make sure what I was planning on doing was okay before I did it. I was instructed to make a line through the mistake (being able to still read what the mistake was) and write above or beside it the correct information. Yes, any common mistake in the USA calls for whiteout, but we are dealing with uscis and we all know they move in different ways and are very picky and choosy of the ppl they approve. I just believe in covering my basis with important things like this... and this is my future,...so just making sure.
