Saw Inglourious Basterds this afternoon and thought it was definitely interesting - wasn't at all what I was expecting: namely a straight Exploitation movie transposed to WW2. The folks who assemble the movie trailers are very good at making one sort of movie appear like something completely different (most notably in the Ridley Scott movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe where an entire character dynamic is created that isn't in the actual movie).

I really liked that Basterds made a pretty intelligent point about a general obsession people have with war movies - and that movie-going audiences tend to take the wrong message out of them; where what is supposed to be terrible and harrowing is often seen as thrilling (much the same thing that Sam Peckinpah discovered about his own movies).

The violence of course was quite strong, but I expected that - what I did find rather odd was the strange casting choice of Mike Myers as a British military officer. My suspension of disbelief broke entirely when he appeared on-screen, and I kept thinking that he would break out into Austin Powers slapstick.

Also thought that the dialog was pretty dense, strange for a Tarantino film. Lot of drama in it - but took forever to get anywhere.

I pay little heed to reviews, to me every scene of a movie has to be interesting, if not, hit the fast forward button, by the way, you can't do that at a movie theater.

Movies are a question of taste, can enjoy a movie just for the sake of the photography and scenery, even though the plot may suck. Strange business, charge a fortune for the first viewing, in a couple of months, can't even give the DVD's away. Can copy it in HDTV format legally if off cable, arrested if copied off a scratched up DVD.

A movie is usually pretty good if it keeps me awake to the end, been a long time since a film like that was made.

But less violent than I thought it would be.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Good to see you approached it with an open mind despite bashing it earlier for its lack of historical accuracy. I was expecting to dislike the movie outright but there were elements I liked enough to recommend the movie.

I don't believe I said anything about that whatsoever...

A trip down memory lane. . .

Certainly there is a problem with historical inaccuracy in fictionalised depictions of WW2 - U571 portrayed the U-Boat Commando raid as something that was carried out by the Americans rather than the British, and that Mel Gibson vehicle - The Patriot fabricated British atrocities during the War of Independence by drawing on things the nazis did in WW2.

I think the worst example in recent years was that movie '300' which reduced the Zoroastrian Persian Empire to sub-human beastmen - and conveyed some pretty blatant fascist subtexts (which has as much to do with Frank Miller's work than with the director's intent).

I've not seen the original movie that this Tarantino flick is inspired by so I'm not entirely sure what the premise is. But I am familiar with a lot of the original grindhouse sources that Tarantino references - and while it can be argued that he's making them his own, he has quite blatantly stolen a number of his characters from old Hong Kong martial arts films. Case in point - the Lucy Liu character from Kill Bill is identical to Lady Snowblood, even down to the costume and the music played during the duel at the end.

Its not bashing, its also not specifically about the Tarantino movie either...

Pardon me for not memorizing your every thought expressed on this movie from six months ago.

Some people like to choose ridiculous things to argue over

Grow the ** up Dave!

Then there are those who lose their minds on a simple dispute. You need some maturing yourself.
