The irony of all of this is that Zidane has been subjected to racist remarks and chants throughout his career, and usually not for being "french" (i.e. smelly crepe eater) but not being French enough

I think it depends on which smilie you use. I use Charles as my emoticon dictionary. He will tell you which emoticon to use for each response that can not be done with words.

The joke itself is racialist. Racism is racialism with discrimination. Of course it is possible to racist and xenophobic or racialist and xenophobic at the same time.

Sure - except as you and I well know, its a stereotype of continental europeans that they don't use deodorant. And I didn't say it was strictly racist. Its racialist IMO. Not exactly the same.
