Yes, and your point is? I understand the reason. I know they are destroyed. Waste at its best. We are not Europe. (yet)

My point is the blatant waste and to somehow think we will get rid of all the gas guzzlers. Joke? And on the other hand think of it this way.

How else would you get rid of ancient gas guzzlers if not by destroying them?

Re-use their parts. Or, re-boil the metal for use on other things.

i don't think boiling metal is gonna do much.

I mean those solid block engines can be re-boiled into something more useful instead of laying waste into wide areas of land. Heck, there are still hundred of thousands of cars from way back when still in the junkyards.

Yes thats a logical question. But an easy answer. Its not the goverments job to do it. Which is another reason why the program is a waste.

Thr free market will determine what the American public wants to drive not Uncle Sam. They can try and pass laws to prohibit gas guzzlers from being on public roads, but they wouldn't get far. The people would not support these type of laws.

Biggest thing I don't like about this program is that a lot of people are only picking up cars that are just "a bit" better MPG wise than the ones they are getting rid of.

NPR report suggests that the minimum MPG needed for the sale will be outmoded in a few years, and these "new" cars would be consider the clunkers later on...

I think they should of forced the people taking this offer to either get "hybrids" or 30+ mpg cars...

and american made vehicles........trading in a us made vehicle and running off and buying a japanese or korean made car with tax money kinda chaps my butt.

The Toyota workers in KY, the Nissan workers in TN and perhaps the Hyundai workers in AL would likely disagree with such requirement. They make these Japaese and Korean cars in the US.

Our dependence on oil is a national security issue, so yes, it's the government's job to enact laws

and programs to reduce said dependence.

All this concern about the forced destruction of old vehicles may be premature. As the germans found out, these clunkers are still of value in other parts of the world. Instead of wrecking old cars, conmen figured they could maximize their benefit if they sold them to Eastern Europe and Africa. So, relax, these vehicles will still be put to good use. :hehe:

Success is measured these days by how much money the government can spend? Big time debt for a temporary rise in sales of cars. Just more, I wanna be your hero government #######.

You are a middle class family with teenagers approaching the age of driving. Would you not be happy if you could buy one of these cars for a couple hundred dollars for your new teenage driver? I think it would be a big relief to your budget. I actually think you would be smiling from ear to ear. Would this not be a big help from the goverment to a growing family? Not everyone drives 30,000 dollar cars.

The point is - it's not a total waste - the recycled parts can go into those couple-hundred $ cars these middle class families are going to buy for their teenagers - so when they break it or crash it, there's replacement parts already waiting in some salvage yard. Get it?

And no - we're not in Europe yet... if we were, those millions of SUV's we all love to drive would all be a thing of the past..

Chevrolet Aveo is made in Korea to GM specifications, here they are:

CHEAP, CHEAPER, and CHEAPEST.

Practically all the latest components are made in China for their other vehicles.

Wife is excited about that clunker program, thing is, we looked at Chrysler, GM, Ford, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Kia, BMW and we didn't find anything we liked. Use to get excited by new car shows in Chicago, now just seeing a bunch of trash. Even those bikini clad models don't look that hot.
